I have been following the unusual story of Issa Touma for over a year now. A Photographer and gallery owner from Aleppo, Issa has waged a courageous one man war with the Baath Party and local officials of Aleppo to gain a free hand in showing daring work of foreign and local artists. This show is a personal triumph for Issa and an important breakthrough for Syrian artists and free expression in the country.

أكد باحث وأكاديمي أمريكي مقيم في دمشق حاليا, أن الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد سيبقى ولن ينهار, والرئيس الأمريكي جورج بوش هو من سيذهب بعد انتهاء ولايته إلى مزرعته في تكساس.
ووصف الأستاذ المساعد في دراسات الشرق في جامعة أوكلاهوما الأمريكية جوشوا لانديس الإدارة الأمريكية الحالية بالمنافقة في كثير من الأشياء, فهي لا تسعى إلى تطبيق القوانين الدولية على إسرائيل سعيها إلى تطبيقها على سوريا ولبنان. وانتقد المحافظين الجدد في الإدارة الذين لم يفكروا أثناء تخطيطهم للحرب على العراق بحقوق الناس في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وإنما كل تفكيرهم في مصالح الأمريكيين فقط.
وأوضح الباحث الأمريكي في لقاء مع الصحفيين والطلاب بالمركز الثقافي الأمريكي في دمشق أن الإدارة الأمريكية عندما بدأت توجه اهتمامها بالشرق الأوسط في السنوات الأخيرة لم تجد أمامها إلا اليهود لتعتمد عليهم في تقديم التحليلات والدراسات لمعرفة المنطقة، وهؤلاء استغلوا الأمور لصالحهم فنصحوهم بضرورة القضاء على العروبة والقومية العربية خدمة لمصالح إسرائيل وتحالفوا مع صقور الإدارة الأمريكية لتغيير الشرق الأوسط ووجدوا في صدام حسين ونظامه الاستبدادي نقطة البداية لهذا التغيير, وفكروا بأن تكون الخطوة الثانية إيران, ولكن المخاوف من امتلاكها للقنبلة النووية جعلتهم يوجهون أنظارهم نحو سوريا على اعتبارها أقل قوة وظنوا بأن تغيير النظام فيها أمر سهل, لذلك اتخذوا من مقتل الرئيس رفيق الحريري حجة لاتهام دمشق بالعملية".
ويقيم جوشوا في العاصمة السورية منذ 6 أشهر ضمن منحة (فولبرايت) التي تقدمها الخارجية الأمريكية للأساتذة والباحثين والطلاب والدارسين بشكل ثنائي مع عدد من بلدان العالم ومنها سوريا وتبلغ مدتها عاما.

I would like to add that this summary of my remarks is woefully inaccurate. I tried to give a balanced view of how the Jewish lobby worked in the run up to the war. It is a question everyone asks here and a question which was asked during my talk. I explained how pro-Israeli think tanks were the most prepared and able to respond to 9-11.
They had an interpretation of events that provided a response, whereas others did not. Moreover, there was very little Middle Eastern expertise in Washington at the time.
I also tried to explain how the Neoconservatives interpreted the events of 9-11 and what solution they proposed. How they believed that dictatorship and bad government in the Middle East were creating factories for producing Mujahidiin and disaffected youth that gravitated toward Bin Laden, Islamic extremism, and anti-Americanism. All this, I agree with.
I also believe that the United States has not been consistent in applying UN resolutions in the Middle East, especially when it comes to Israel, but this rendition of my answer to the reporter’s question hits very wide from the mark.

The syrian regime restrain any qualitative change toward a modern and strong state that may compete with the jewish state .The aim is to deplete syrian human,cultural,scientific,econmic ressources .

Can not but agree with Joshua's comment on how the only group that was really prepared after 9-11 were the pro Israel think thanks, Netanyahu's first impressions on the gruesome atrocities in New York city were : the attack is " very good" , it was a tongue... however he quickly corrected himself , that now the world will have a better understanding of how Israelis suffer under Palestinians ??
The Intifada was gathering momentum and support until 9-11 boom ...
