Did anyone see Turk and Bayanouni?

If Anyone saw the Mustaqbil TV program last night with Riad al-Turk of the Social Syrian Democratic Party and Bayanouni of the Moslem Brotherhood broadcast from London, I would love to get a description of it with your reaction. I missed it. A number of journalists in town would also like to hear public reaction.

Nassim Yaziji has begun a blog, entitled "Middle East Policy," which looks like it should be interesting. Nassim is a Syrian, I believe, who studied political science at the Lebanese University in Beirut and is now living in London. It is worth taking a look at. Nassim says he will, "debate Middle East policy issues, convey Middle Eastern viewpoints, and serve as a bridge among scholars, researchers and politicians of the western and Middle East."

Moderating "Syria Comment".
A number of people have asked me to moderate the comment section of "Syria Comment," in order to censor remarks by those who use abusive language, "scream" constantly, and generally inhibit discussion. I don't want to do this for the obvious reasons. One never knows where to draw the line on censorship. It is a slippery slope and even some of the worst screamers are sometimes interesting and have points worth considering. I would ask, however, that commenters try to be observe basic norms of politeness in order to keep this forum open to those who prefer not to be screamed at. Syria Comment is more interesting when everyone contributes. Thanks, Joshua

Josh,

Thanks for broaching the issue of the comments section. I agree with you that we're all for free speech, but what about those who actually threaten others?

As long as ssprs and members are not attacked. As long as this serve as a forum for dialog and not attack those with notable family, U.S. based or have you. We will respect all views and respond respectefully. You get out of line, you publish crap that is not true you will hear it from us accordingly. We respect all views, as long as they are said in a discussion form and not published merely as an attack.

We started using this forum recently to evaluate whether to activate publicly the SSPRS website blog and chat area or not, in addition to testing resistant to secular Republican Programs by Syrians and stating our counter-viewpoints. We started here after evaluating the material and blogs published in open forum at Ghadry’s SRP, we determined that it is too time and intellectual waste of time, in addition to the assured harassment to members carried by other parties.

To our surprise, after answering to the secular program resistance, which seemed productive in light of the changes carried by the Moslem Brotherhood, surprisingly, we ran into a more potent resistant to the rule of Older Families and the fear of the Zaaim style of leadership, mostly from Lebanese bloggers.

We will continue to participate in this blog forum for little a awhile as it has proven to be a good lab test. to issues that we did not even foresee that it would be an issue at all.

We have professional team monitoring this site, that are part of the SSPRS intelligence unit, they have decades of profiling experience. We are only interested in the opinion of Syrians people and not those opinion expressed by Lebanese, Syrian-American or Academia be it Syrian or global.

You want respect, start by respecting yourself.

ya josh, tarek, arabgeek, et al -

i would also ask for no moderation/screening at all on the part of josh. for one - it's very time consuming. but more importantly, "censorship" is such a delicate issue - most of us have been suffered from it (& if only when we had to "tunnel" in order to access our hotmail accounts from damascus...) & it is one of the main complaints we keep throwing at the regional governments.

in addition - those people who keep using foul language and/or hate speech in this particular "comments section" will only effect everybody else's disdain towards them & thus are not really threat to the conversation amongst the rest of us.

tarek & arabgeek -- i'll give josh my e-mail address & you can get it from him -- we should get in touch, no? sorry, but i won't post it here - i already get enough spam as it is -> i don't want to have "metaz ssrps agha" launch a "denial of service attack" on me... ;)

syrian issue:

i think that at this time, for those of us who are in the "media" field (blogs etc.) to establish networks of information & exchange. one of the biggest traps to fall into is to perceive each other on the basis of ethno-religious identities - if you want to see how bad it can get, have a look at lebanon...

it shouldn't matter which religion people belong to, or what language they speak, or where they were born (or, for that matter, where they live) - we should judge each other by our actions & conduct. thus, i don't care if you're sunni, shi'a, alawi, christian, jewish, baha'i, yazidi, non-religious or whatever. i don't care if your "mother tongue" is arabic, kurdish, hebrew, turkish, persian, english, french or swedish. i don't care if you live in damascus or aleppo, in beirut or amman or cairo, in den haag or tel aviv or london or new york. or in southern california...

if you are interested in creating a productive, participatory civil society that (hopefully sooner than later) will achieve a participatory democratic political system then i'd be happy to know you, to talk to you, to hear your opinions, to collaborate on projects.

if you are attacking all those who don't toe your line, if you use hate speech, racist & defamatory lingo, etc. -> in THAT case i will try to not let you affect me. but i will not offer the other cheek...

so far i have not "publish[ed] crap that is not true" (quote from the 3rd post above) - i had started by asking who the "ssprs" is, and - since nobody had answered my initial question - then compiled information and cross-references.

i have not used derogatory language. i have not attacked anyone, verbally or otherwise. granted, i've made some sarcastic remarks - but i understand sarcasm to be within the boundaries of what is permissible in the blogosphere. please let me know if i am mistaken.

"metaz aldendeshe" seems to be the same as "agha" and as "syrian republican party" and as "ssprs" - i don't know why he would post under different identities. -- i merely pointed this out.

ASIDE from this current controversy i would like to emphasize that the one main hinderance for a productive interaction is the continuous perception of each other along ethno-religious (i.e. sectarian) lines.

THAT we will have to overcome.

Unless we know who you are, your background and your surname it is hard to be fair and objective in our response to your obvious inflamatory remarks.

You want to be polite, you know who we are and the leader background. Be polite and we don't care if you are Alwaites or Baathist or otherwise, if you are Syrian Citizen, we are interested in your opinion. We are open for debate. Don't come and bad mouth us, our families, our programs. Come present yours or ask about ours politely.

Have 16 computers and 8 keyboards infront of my face on my network to a total of 32 in other areas. Depend on which one I am using at any given moment.

metaz,

are you seriously asking me if you can "use" or "need" me? if so, then you're in the wrong forum.

this is not a recruiting station.

and why are you telling me how many computers you have? i personally only have one - does it matter?

and why do you care about tarek's surname, his background - are you going to judge him by his family? his ethnic background? his religion?

i really don't understand why you are so passive-aggressive.

and i am (again) asking: what is the story behind www.orontes.net? why is the SRP/SSPRS website only in english? why do you keep alternating between foul language in bad english & rather polished sentences?

i am afraid, as long as that is not clear, nobody will want to cooperate with you. which is sad - the program on the SSRPS website sounds really good. but we see that the people writing under "ssrps/syrian republican party" are contradicting their own official goals - they spew hate language, they insult people's religions, they are anti-semitic (even though in their own program they call for respect of everyone's religion, ethnicity, etc. & would like to see israel to be part of the fertile crescent political community).

all of this makes everyone very suspicious of who you are & what you want.

and to repeat what i've said previously: i don't "do" ethnic/national identity - i idenify myself as a human being whose life happens to center around the middle east - for personal, educational, social, and occupational reasons.

mr. metaz aldendeshe/ssprs/srs/orontes/"anonymous"/etc -

so now you're on the anti-semitic level, the last resort of the those in the middle east who feel that their own arguments are not convincing, so the only way they can engage their perceived "enemies" is by calling them "jews"?

this is problematic on two levels - first, you hold that ethnic/religious identity is the one that determines a human being's behavior, his/her opinions, politics, way of life, etc. second, you insinuate that "jews" are bad, the enemy.

neither one of those attitudes is (1) in accordance with your own, stated party goals and premises, and (2) not very helpful if you truly want to achieve any positive impact among the readers of josh's blog.

and it doesn't matter if the things written here fall under any copyright or not - by linking to "jew watch" you are identifying yourself as a racist bigot full of hatred for everyone who does not follow your own politics.

how again is that different from the ba'ath leaderships of syria & iraq ('till 2003)? from the islamists like usama & friends, like al-zarqawi, like al-zawahiri, like "takfir wa higra"? or like the right wing of the ssnp?

sebastian,

you seem to be one of the sane posters around here (wa Tarik kamaan).

Please ignore those idiots (SRP) and start to discuss what you think should be done.

I'm an American idiot. But I see Syria in an impossible position. It has no resources to sell. And America has no real understanding of the Arab world. And the Israeli pressure to keep Syria weak for decades can't be ignored.

I would love to snap my fingers and have Syria a happy thriving democracy tomorrow, but that is not going to happen. There are so many factors that build a democracy, that pinning it on one person is laughable.

But I also understand that there are a lot of smart people trying to figure out what direction Syria (and Lebanon) should take. Democracy is great, but has its faults. I actually think some Arab leaders are trying to figure out what is good, what is bad, and provide proper leadership.

Very strange. We know so much about Metaz and SSPRS and nothing about Darfourt and Tarek, can we please be directed to a website or webpage were we can see some biographies about you, some article written in some newspaper, journal or any other public publication. You acts like you are the Syria's experts and putting down Metaz, Even claiming that he is trying to get money, how about you, who the hell are you?

Would like to ask Tarek and Darfourt about their identities and origin in Arabic. They claim they are Syrians. I concluded that they are one and the same person and they are non-Arabic speaking person. Why don't you prove my finding wrong.

You say : What will the outsiders who read this say about Syrians?

They will think that these are not Syrians and if, they have been westernized, americanized. These comments make me so sick, this is the last time I shall have read them.

Hey what happend to those reports that the "opposition" was uniting? was it unfounded? or was it delayed due to stage fright?

Since I found out about this blog, I have been logging on every day. I found it interesting and posted my opinions a few times.

Unfortunately, this site has turned into trash. I will no longer waste my time. And, judging by the contributors, it seems like most of the other pevious, serious participants are gone as well. What a shame!

From the discussion I've seen of late, I understand completely why Bashar needs to stay in charge. No one else seems to be able formulate a decent sentence, much less a political program dealing with all the domestic/foreign issues at hand for Syria.
