Jihadists Call Asad an "American Boot-Licker" because he is Arresting Them

The Jamestown Foundation suggests, much as human rights lawyers here do, that Asad has been cracking down of Jihadists and anyone the regime thinks might assist them. Judging from comments posted on the Syrian jihadi websites, the Jihadists are upset with the Syrian regime. Some state that President Assad is "licking the American boots" and has stepped up the campaign against the mujahideen over the last few weeks with "many clashes and sieges and arrests of large numbers of brothers." For several months now the Jihadist websites have been debating whether to begin operations against the Syrian regime.

This Jihadist outrage supports the picture that Razan Zeitouneh has already painted for us of crack-down against Jihadists which has been going on for months.

Syria Pressures Its Jihadists

October 4, 2005 – Volume II, Issue 18
"Terrorism Focus" is a publication of the Jamestown Foundation

Despite criticism from Washington, Syria appears to be increasing pressure on Islamist militants attempting to cross its borders into Iraq, as evidenced by a series of recent clashes. In early September, Syrian security services made in-roads against reputed Tanzim Jund al-Sham cells ("Organization of the Army of Greater Syria"), an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization originally set up in Afghanistan by Syrian, Palestinian and Jordanian militants. (On the question of the identity of Jund al-Sham, see Terrorism Focus Volume II, Issue 12).

On September 3, Syrian anti-terrorism forces killed five suspected terrorists, said to be affiliated with Jund al-Sham, in a shootout at the group's hideout near the northern city of Hama. At the same time, in a move which has brought the regime condemnation from human rights groups, three wives were held by security forces in order to pressure members of the group to give themselves up. Further clashes with Jund al-Sham militants occurred on September 8 in Hasaka, in northeastern Syria with claims that the group was "planning bomb attacks in Damascus."

Syria has come under increasing pressure from Washington over its position on Islamist militants. On September 12 American Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad said Washington was running out of patience with Syria's continuing role in Iraq's violence. The same day Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari also warned against allowing insurgents to penetrate Iraq. Despite the accusations, the Syrian state-run Tishrin newspaper said in an editorial Wednesday that Syria rejected the claim as "incapable of providing even one piece of actual evidence" (www.teshreen.com).

The Syrian view appears to be borne out by statements made by militant sympathisers, judging from comments posted on the Syrian jihadi forum Minbar Suria al-Islami (www.nnuu.org). On September 16, a posting titled "A Call to the People of Islam from the Outpost Warriors in the Land of Greater Syria: the Alawites have become Arrogant,"—addressed to a Saudi salafist readership— criticises their tacit support for the Saudi regime and calls for them to help the Syrian mujahideen against the Syrian government which is "employing all its forces in an attempt to prevent them aiding their brothers in Iraq." The Syrian government, the author claims, is interested in "a stable Iraq and the withdrawal of American forces from it," so President Assad is "licking the American boots" and has stepped up the campaign against the mujahideen over the last few weeks with "many clashes and sieges and arrests of large numbers of brothers." The publication on September 23 of the second issue of the Minbar Suria al-Islami web journal supports the point by highlighting the clashes with Jund al-Islam, and the 70-odd Arabs of differing nationalities arrested while attempting to infiltrate into Iraq. It reproduces the claim of the Syrian Foreign Ministry to have arrested in all over 1248 Arabs attempting to cross into Iraq (www.nnuu.org/vb/showthread.php?t=1203).

Welcome to the Baathist theater.
It is supposed to be funny and serious, but like every staged theater in North Korea and Syria instead of laughing you walk out thinking. have I been stroked, why do I have the feeling that the authority are stroking me. Am I just too illiterate and stupid in comparison to my comrades to understand these funny episodes. Maybe I should get some THAKAFA and be more MOUTHAKKAF like those Alawites peasants commrads of mine.

According to several reliable sources, some who have been supposedly detained and engaged in firefights with Assad Baathist criminal thugs. And according to some video footages of these staged arrest episodes we seen, the Baathist theater directors have staged a not so funny and serious theater for the world to see. As usual, relying on dummy with peanut sized brain like American Landice’s (alien among us) to help the world understand it through the Baathist-lenninist-Kim IL Song propaganda machine, helps you make believe that this Baathist theater is funny, serious and real.

The episode starts out by apprehending the suspected youth group by the Alawites dictator thugs (percenter), While the camera running the youth were given a chase and caught, and after scaring the hell out of the youths, the camera turned off. First they were
fleeced from all the cash and valuable, even the Marlboro’s pack. Then they were told that they can go on to complete the mission in Iraq if they cooperated in the completion of the video, which everyone accept of course. Sometimes it is not so easy, the Baathist thugs in Assad’s organized crime family demands huge some of money as ransom. They briefly detain the groups without any documentation, then after someone comes in with a large sum of cash, they are released and they go on to Iraq. Other times, information is collected on them, family, friends and whatever possible. This information is then sent to another group of Baathist thugs that works in a more sophisticated ways. They use the information to extort large sum of money from the family and friends of those Arabs in the Persian Gulf that were let go to Iraq using various con-schemes that pleads with the family and friends that the cash is needed to save the life’s of those beloved one. Those that the sophisticated Alawites-Baathist intelligence finds out that the family is relatively wealthy, are held in detention until a large sum of cash is paid, those are supposedly repatriated ( for the world to see of course).

The Baathists perfected this con-game flawlessly. It is amazing how Alawites-Baathists have mastered the world of organized crime and taken it into this high level of sophistication. It would have been a lot better for Syria and more productive for Syria’s economy if the Alawites-Baathists have educated these cadre of comrades in Business, Management and Marketing than relying on the Alawites-Baathist basic instinct and hereditary natural trait of theft, crimes and thuggery to run the country. Even Saddam’s sent his Baathist peasant stock thugs abroad to Europe and the United States to get some education.

Just imaging how better Syria would have been if the 300,000+ Alawites in the various Mukhabrat employed (used) by the Alawites-Baathist regime of Bashar Assad were educated in the field of Business and Economy, turning the creativity of these cadre from crimes into real corporate business.

But that may not suite the boss and underling of this organized crime family. The Alawites after 43 years still live under the Feudal Lord System. But now they have only one corrupt lord, and his not from a noble family of notables, he is a WAHSH that is robbing them, their future generation of Alawites, the Syrian National Treasury and Natural resources, hording it and disposing of it as it is his property.

Like Ronald Reagan says " here we go again"

According to a very reliable intelligence sources in the Syrian Mukhabrat (an SSPRS paid mole). The Alawites-Baathists have setup several fake Jihadi websites to carry on with the cowardly surrogate warfare they always relied on in the past. The only kind of warfare they know how to operate under. It used to be Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, HizbuAli (hizbullah), but that after a single Israeli over flight, the brave Baathist leader can no longer use. Now he is focusing his attention on Iraq. One of the most important strategy the Baathists have ( a typical Bazaar concepts) is used to be scarring the West and Arabs that the Moslem Brotherhood will take over Syria. They blown the MB way out of proportion, concocted fictitious capabilities and popularity statistics and shoved it on ignorant in the West and the Landices of the world.

This old (fear card) was blasted out by SSPRS and the several opposition groups around. The MB has no armed resistance, maintains no stockpile of weapons or Jihadis, have stated repeatedly that they are only for peaceful opposition and the little cash they receive from Saudi Arabia is just enough to maintains the blabber mouse website and mired of BAYANAT and DECLERATION they put out. They are toothless and insignificant organization. In Syria, even when it was Democratic, they never were able to get that much votes, managed through coalitions to push couple of representatives to the Parliament and never were able to hold any high level position in government. The Moslem Brotherhood popularity stems from the militancy of which they confronted the Baathist regime and not the Islamic teaching or the great Islamic Agenda for the economy and society. If the Moslem brotherhood were to abandon the Peaceful Change of the Syrian Government and resort to armed conflict once again, you can bet that they will be a serious contender in Syria, because like the Mujahideen they will be able to again attract large number of operative and the cash needed to operates. All they are now is blabber mouth for BAYANAT and TAKARIR.

So the Baathist Bazzary brained in Damascus started looking for another more believable FEAR CARD, they founded it in JIHADI’s and now promoting the” fear of Jihadis take over of Syria” as the new trump card to play for the west and America. They are setting up, fake Jihadi surrogates, since the old surrogates can not be used anymore, establishing websites and a complete entities to achieve only one purpose ( JIHADI FEAR OF TAKING SYRIA AND HELPING THE JIHADI BROTHERS IN IRAQ)

Final note: it was Jund Al sham, an Islamic Jihadi Organization, that were never heard off before that sent a video to Al Jazz era claiming responsibility for the assassination of Rafik Harriri.

There is much more for the story, but we got to go and make a living. Unlike smart governments Like those Baathists and Iran which just released a 50 Million Dollars aid to various Palestinian and Islamic groups in Lebanon, the U.S. Government gives Syrian oppositions, us the usual, the middle finger, so we have to go to earn some cash. Or maybe we should see if Iran will help. They have more interests in seeing a strong and reliable Syria than the United States. In fact that is the main front for them today and Assad and his Baathist thugs are for sure not the people they can rely on as they are discovering. As Iran’s Majlis Speaker Gholam Haddad-Adel said to us several times “BASHAR IS AN AMERICAN BOOT LICKER” those were his words, this is a phrase invented by him, not the Jihadis.

More about this fake Islamic Jihadi that was setp up by Syria's Alawites Baathist in Moslem brotherhood website:
Titled here in Arabic:

"جند الشام" تتوعد بذبح ميليس ونواب الحريري وجماعة جبريل تهدد بتقسيم الجيش اللبناني!

Jund Al-sham promises to slaughter German Investigator Mehlis and Harirri's Lebanease Parliement representatives..Ahmed Jibril (PFLP) warns of intetion to divide the Lebanese Army.

This is what the Alwaites-Baathist reformers that Landis support are up to next to bring stability and coopreation with American.

Hurry up Bush, you gonna loose it all if you don't act now.

Well, Imad, that is pretty good today, looks like we have the Syrian Republican Party Syriacommnet.com to us alone. I like that. Keep it up dudes.

Looks like all the Baathists are already on the run, destroying evidences. They are not fighting back anymore, they know it is the end of the road for them. I wonder what people like Landis will be teaching in College soon, Alien abduction theories, Who the hell is going to give this guy a job teaching Baathism in University! maybe while he still got few days left his Alawite peasant wife can teach him how to milk cows. He can find a job in Oklahoma, plenty of openings. Which bring a funny story to mind, real, the honest truth:

A Russian friend of mine, very attractive lady in her early thirties, a graduate from Irkusk Technology Institute, (I think it is Irkusk, well, it is the major city near Lake Baikal). She is Paper engineer, that is, she knows how to take a tree and turn it to a sheet of paper. She got a job in California at a land management company. During a business meeting with a new client, happened to be a large Conglomerate of Dairies, the president was heading the meeting of about 30 officials. The president mentions that they have to keep the Cows pregnant all year around so they can milk them. She responded to that surprising news by squeezing her large sized tits together and saying moooomoooo. The meeting was adjourned, because no one was able or could stop laughing afterward. She apologized later, and was forgiven because she told them that she felt a sever headache and had taken medications that day, but management insisted on the meeting.

So did you know that a cow must stay pregnant all year around to be milked? Maybe Landis did, he should go back to that profession, he can even find work here in Kellogg center at CalPoly Pomona. It smells bad there, but hey, so what, it is California.

I think he is busy writing a book titled BAATHIST WILL HAVE BROUGHT RENNAISSACE TO THE MIDDLE EAST, IF BUSH GAVE THEM ANOTHER FORTY THREE MELINUM. Or more likely he is writing help wanted ads.

President Bush Said:

"(As Zarqawi has vowed, "We will either achieve victory over the human race or we will pass to the eternal life." And the civilized world knows very well that other fanatics in history, from Hitler to Stalin to Pol Pot, consumed whole nations in war and genocide before leaving the stage of history. Evil men, obsessed with ambition and unburdened by conscience, must be taken very seriously — and we must stop them before their crimes can multiply)".

Yes Mr. President, we agree with you, but you forgot to mention taht Zirqawi boss, Bin Ladin, in addition to those you listed, were all the United States allies. Even after Pol Pot commited a great genocide killing more than 4 million people, the U.S. Government and the CIA made an alliance with him and funded his operation.

Not commnting on the President Speach, just stating some facts.

Very Strange, President Bush left Saddam Hussein and few other dozens of tyrants out of his list of fanatics in history. I guess that would be to obvious that it will raise the question mark raised in the previous comment!!! Dude, those are U.S. allies, you supplied them with intelligence, money and weapons, even WMD’s. He knows American have a very short memory to remember that. Sorry, we brought it to attention.

checked out the website mentioned in this comment that this staement was attributed to:

The Syrian view appears to be borne out by statements made by militant sympathisers, judging from comments posted on the Syrian jihadi forum Minbar Suria al-Islami (www.nnuu.org). On September 16, a posting titled "A Call to the People of Islam from the Outpost Warriors in the Land of Greater Syria: the Alawites have become Arrogant,"—addressed to a Saudi salafist readership— criticises

Just by a cursory browsing through the website and an analysis of the comments and content we could ascertain fakeness. Ultra caution about calling it a legitimate Islamic website. While the commentators and participants could be duped to believing what it purported to be, an experienced person can immediately spot serious abnormalities.

Arrest of Dr. Mahmoud Sarem

SHRC

Reliable sources from Damascus have affirmed to SHRC that Dr. Mahmoud Sarem was arrested by one of the branches of the Syrian security and intelligence apparatuses.

The sources also revealed that Dr. Mahmoud Sarem was arrested by the Syrian Intelligence in a secretive manner, when he was summoned for interrogation, around two weeks ago. Nobody knows of his whereabouts or what has happened to him after that.

Dr. Mahmoud Sarem (72 years) is a surgeon, as well as a writer and poet from the province of Lattakia, although he has lived in the province of al-Raqqa for a long time. Dr. Mahmoud Sarem is also well known for his courageous, noble and nationalistic stances.

SHRC condemns in the strongest terms the arrest of Doctor Mahmoud Sarem and requests for his immediate release as well as the release of all political prisoners, and to put an end to the arrest of citizens that is carried in an unjust manner and outside the law.

Reliable sources in Syria have revealed that Syrian Intelligence Apparatus arrested Sheikh Abdul-Qadir al-Shawaaf on Friday morning, 23/9/2005. The Sheikh, who is 78 years old, is an imam in the city of Hama, and a previous supervisor of the mosques in the province.

According to the sources, the arrest occurred on the Syrian borders at Dar’a, upon the Sheikh’s return from Saudi Arabia where he had visited his children and undergone surgery, due to his bad health problems.

Eyewitnesses said that the Sheikh was treated badly upon his arrest, with no mercy; even though he is of old age. On the same day, he was transferred to the Suweida Prison in which the Syrian security authorities routinely torture and treat detainees in a bad and degrading manner, whilst the highest authorities in the Syrian regime are well aware of all this.

The sources have also revealed that Sheikh Abdul-Qadir al-Shawaaf is a traditional Islamic scholar, and doesn’t lean towards any political group or have any political tendency. His health is in a very bad condition and he is in need of medical care, considering his old age. He has been arrested on more than one occasion and was subjected to torture and severe beatings at times even though he was never accused of committing a crime, and only questioned about the charity events that he held, mosques that he directs and the poor families that he has helped in his city.

SHRC condemns the arrest of this elderly man and his placement in prison, and condemns all arbitrary arrests that have no justification, and calls for the immediate release of the Mr. Abdul-Qadir al-Shawaaf.

SHRC also calls upon all friends and supporters of human rights to work for the release of the Sheikh and to reward him for the humanistic and dignified actions that he engages in.

From and About Syria
Jihad El Khazen Al-Hayat - 07/10/05//

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says that his country had absolutely no connection to the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, but doesn't rule out seeing international parties try to politicize the international investigation in order to pressure Damascus.

President al-Assad links the extension of President Emile Lahoud's mandate to the battle in which France and the US joined forces against Syria, each for its own reasons. The White House is pressuring to rein in the Syrian position regarding the US military presence in Iraq and the confrontation with Israel. France found itself in a big political dispute with the US and decided to offer Syria as a price for reducing the harshness of Washington's position against Paris.

I write today from Syria, and about Syria, after sitting with President al-Assad for more than two hours in his Rawda office, to hear his opinion about the latest developments and review with him the situation that was prevailing on the eve of Lahoud's extension, the period preceding Hariri's assassination and afterward, the situation in Iraq, US pressure, and other matters.

Not everything that is known is said, and not everything that is heard is written. However, I will publish what I can and what I think I can of al-Assad's remarks and arguments, as this discussion sheds light on some aspects of the current controversy.

*The agreement over Syria between President George Bush and President Jacques Chirac began in Normandy in June 2004, when the extension hadn't yet been raised. When the Syrians heard in roughly August that the two countries were preparing a Security Council Resolution against Damascus and its interests, extension became possible.
*It wasn't the extension followed by the battle, but rather the other way around.
*Emile Lahoud is a man of principle and honest; he maintained his position and was the best choice to fight such a battle with us, as later events proved. He remained a steadfast supporter of the Resistance (in answer to my question: If you could go back in time, would you make the same decision regarding extension?).
*I told Rafik Hariri that the extension was not directed against him, but that there were political necessities, and that he could leave my office and "throw away" what I had told him. He said that he wouldn't act in such a way with a Syrian desire, and later informed us that he had decided to vote for the extension.
*Prime Minister Fouad Siniora came to me and I told him that we wouldn't seek to make his visit a failure; we wanted it to be a success. He said that he wanted good relations with Syria, and we said that we wanted good relations with Lebanon. I told him that we are a State and can implement what we want, but asked if he could implement what he wants in the Lebanese Cabinet?
*I told Prime Minister Siniora that we don't want Lebanon to be a crossing-point or center to bypass national issues; other than this, we will help you to our utmost. We are comfortable with him because he's a patriot.
*Go to the people who warned Rafik Hariri and warned him saying that his life was in danger. Where did this information come from? If Syria was involved, give us the details.
*We have absolute confidence in our innocence and have completely cooperated with the international probe. The investigators questioned people and took all of the requested information.
*The Syrian regime has a strong hierarchy and no one is in "business for himself" (in answer to a question). No officer acts alone. If he does, this is considered treason and the punishment is death. All of the bombings in Lebanon targeted opponents of Syria, as if the person behind them wanted to strengthen the accusations against Syria.
*Sources close to the investigation spoke of a suicide mission and the discovery of DNA. A Salafi can carry out such an operation by himself, or backed by a mighty (intelligence) agency of a big or powerful state. We don't have people to whom we can say "go and die."
*Any intervention to impose international tutelage on the region, or any type of intervention or pressure will further complicate the situation. The region is liable to spin out of control, the groundwork is there.
*There are suspects; this is expected, and doesn't constitute an accusation. Charges are made through evidence, and the investigation will handle both the criminal and political aspects. We are confident of our innocence, meaning that the criminal aspect will put us in a stronger position when it comes to the political side.
Finally, President Bashar al-Assad repeatedly insisted on Syria's innocence in Hariri's assassination, and its ability, along with that of the national Resistance in Lebanon to remain steadfast. "They" are trying to confront Hezbollah in Lebanon, but have fond that it enjoys a strong position, so they went back to trying with Syria. However, the final target is Iran. In our opinion, it is an attempt to weaken or distance its allies.

Zouheir Kseibati Al-Hayat - 07/10/05//

The shock could unite most Lebanese, in case the German Judge Detlev Mehlis does not include in his report, which is expected in two weeks, what they consider to be the whole truth about the executors of the assassination of former PM Rafik Hairri… and also in case the report was restricted to general suspicions calling for more proof or decisive evidence.

The infiltration of US information, stating that a long extension of Mehlis mission is likely, may be "programmed". This is due to the fact that the administration of President George Bush is so absorbed in internal other complex international crises, including the "nuclear" standoff with Iran, that it might be prevented from dedicating sufficient efforts to deal with the repercussions of a "sizeable earthquake" the report will set off in Lebanon and the region. As for Syria, since it is confident, as it asserts, that it is absolutely innocent, it has chosen to wage a counter-offensive on the "ill-willed" among those who want - or hope - to involve it in the assassination. It has also waged a counter-offensive on "Arabists" themselves, among those Damascus hopes will regret their call for the pullout of the Syrian army from the Lebanese territories, where the "flow" of assassinations is ongoing and "the ghost" is chasing everybody.

During the lost time too, and following a compulsory "warrior's break", it is permissible for those who dub themselves as allies of Syria in Lebanon to set the stage to their participation in the counter-offensive against those who were stained as "agents". In fact, the sources of President Emile Lahoud, who, as they say, was showered with defamation and slander, rose up following a mobilization campaign, to save the presidency for concealed purposes from the skepticism it was subjected to, since the assassination of February 14…which overthrew all the "brotherhood and coordination" that existed between two Arab brethren, "denying" all the links between the veins of a country, which were cut off by the wars of the Lebanese brothers.

Damascus is entitled to be on the defensive to shield a regime and a destiny, within and for Syria, and to watch closely the schemes being woven to trigger turmoil in the countries of the region, according to the safety belt project pattern, which relieves Israel from any "steadfastness". If Syria is allowed to warn against "the politicization" of Mehlis' report as a way to indict it, and subsequently pave the way to besiege it (always according to this pattern), it is worth asking about the wisdom of pre-empting the report's outcome - on the Lebanese level- by trying to revive the roles of the allies under several pretexts. These include self defense and the refusal to be silent about the "injustice" and "bias" towards the eldest brother and towards what he invested in Lebanon, before he was forcefully evicted under US pressure. It is worth asking too if it is wise to replicate a pattern, previously tested by both Syrians and Lebanese, which led them to humiliation, while some in Lebanon warn against a new humiliation taste marked by a sour Washington tutelage.

All Lebanese, whether allies of March 8 and 14, or advocates of Mehlis' "earthquake", should simply wait during the lost time. However, some of them are permeated by obsessive scenarios that overthrow facts about what happened during and after February 14, or at least by attempts to distort remembrance of the earthquake, under the pretext that Lebanon is losing the immunity that allows it to bear the repercussions of unveiling the criminals and terrorists. The dream of chasing the "ghosts" - from whatever nationality- may not be merely an illusion, at least once in the country's history beaten up by the earthquakes of its wars, the wars of others, and the costs of defending, solely at times, Arabism of a region many have slaughtered since the time of "alien" pragmatism. It is only evident to say that any citizen in the smallest Lebanese village knows that the country is intended to stay paralyzed to serve, against its will, those who pretend to be Arabists.

The first and foremost priority which shields Lebanon from the rounds of violence, and from the attempts to use them, is the awareness of their citizenship and the scopes of their belongigness. Subsequently, the disagreement over the identities of the enemies will fade away. Accusations of blasphemy and treason become blasphemy and treason against the nation and Arabism, should it be meant to be civilized, and not distorted by the calculations of governments or organizations…. As such, no one will fear the arms of the resistance, and there will only be an internal alliance to safeguard a peace that does not falter every twenty years.

As for Syria, after the significant pullout, its utmost priority should be self awareness in a mutating world and self preservation from within, based on the fact that it is the major and only card that would protects it from "breakthroughs" and "conspiracies"…Should be convinced that the stage of exchanging cards does not hold forever, even under the Arabism umbrella, and that the conspiracy ghost could turn some day into a devastating nightmare.

Politics & Policies:Syria frets UN verdict
By CLAUDE SALHANI
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Lebanon and Syria are awaiting -- somewhat with apprehension -- the release of a report by Detlev Mehlis, the U.N.'s German investigator who is looking into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. The report, expected to be released at the end of October, will undoubtedly ruffle feathers in both capitals, but principally in Damascus.

Syria is accused by the United States and the Lebanese of responsibility in the Feb. 14 killing of Hariri and 20 bystanders. At the time of the assassination, Syrian troops were still deployed in Lebanon, as was an important contingent of its intelligence apparatus.

Mehlis' report is expected to contain a comprehensive outline of the investigation's progress, including technical details describing how the assassination was planned and executed. What is still unknown is whether the information contained in the U.N. document will specifically identify any Syrian officials.

Middle East analysts suspect at least two senior Syrian names could be attached to the report. This would partially explain the initial reluctance shown by Syrian President Bashar Assad to allow Mehlis access to Syrian officials.

It was only after repeated pressure was applied by the United Nations, by Saudi Arabia and principally by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Assad that Damascus reluctantly acquiesced and permitted Mehlis and his team to question Syrian officials. But then only on condition those questioned not be treated as suspects.

Informed sources told United Press International that among the officials Mehlis is believed to have interviewed while in Damascus are Roustom Ghazaleh, former chairman of the Syrian military intelligence in Lebanon between 2002-2005, Maher Assad, brother of the president and chief of the palace praetorian guard, Asaf Shouaqat, director of Syrian military intelligence who is the president's brother-in-law.

Observers say there is little doubt Bashar is in a very uncomfortable position, coming under criticism from the old guard for having allowed the situation to develop into the quagmire it has turned into. Some have privately voiced their frustration that under the leadership of Bashar's father, Hafez, this would have never been allowed to happen.

Bashar is also coming under increasing pressure from his uncle, Rifaat Assad, now living in exile in France and Spain since his brother, Hafez Assad, forced him out of Syria. Rifaat, according to some reports, has been trying to garner support among Syrian dissidents, hoping to make a comeback in Syrian politics.

If Bashar's brother or brother-in-law were to be named as suspects in the Hariri affair, the Syrian president would find himself in a lose-lose situation: surrender them to an international court of justice and loose face among his people. Remain steadfast and face possible international sanctions.

"If Bashar were to hand over a member of his immediate family, it would start unraveling the entire Syrian power structure," said someone well informed with the workings of the regime in Damascus, and who requested anonymity.

Meanwhile, a group calling itself Jund el Sham said it would kill Mehlis, an obvious sign the German investigator is starting to seriously worry some people. The group also threatened to kill members of the Lebanese authorities, reports from Beirut and Damascus say.

"We will slaughter without hesitation the reigning Lebanese authority and those who make up the majority in Parliament for collaborating with the West, to impose a new tutelage over Lebanon," Al-Mustaqbal newspaper quoted Jund el Sham leaflets distributed in the northern Lebanese township of Rahbeh in the Akkar region as saying. Jund el Sham means soldiers of Syria.

The group threatened to overthrow the Lebanese authorities "by all means." They said Mehlis was included on their hit list "because he is one of the senior-most officers of the Mossad," the Israeli intelligence service.

Mehlis, who some reports from Beirut say may extend his investigation by several weeks, is in Vienna drafting his final report on the outcome of the inquiry into Hariri's killing.

From Beirut, the Daily Star said, "Mehlis has adopted an account in his report indicating the Mitsubishi automobile suspected of carrying the explosions that killed Hariri entered Lebanon through Syria. Another unofficial and non-final version says the car entered Lebanon through the Northern port of Tripoli."

The Daily Star sources also speculated that the U.N. report will describe Syria's cooperation during Mehlis' investigations in the country two weeks ago as either "insufficient or unacceptable."

Either way, the outcome of the U.N. report does not look promising for Syria, especially given President George W. Bush's accusations that Syria (and Iran) is supporting terrorist groups.

Wish no one playing hanky panky and no extension of the Mehlis report, let the truth and evidences come out, the sooner the better. No one can dispute Mehlis report. Unlike what the Baathist are Shia HizbuAli trying to portray in the media, that Mehlis report is politicized. There are no such at all, Mehlis is one of the most partial and professional investigator in the world. This whole 1559 deal is one of the United States and United Nation most rarest successes.

It is very unfortunate that the Baathist already resorting to old play of unknown surrogates and Jund Al Sham (a fake Syrian Baathist org) already threatening to kill Seniora, Mehlis and all of Harriri Parliamnet members. What do the Baathist really know and fear about Mehlis to put out this threat!

Assad's desperate attempt at forging an alliance with the mullahs of Tehran to stop the march of freedom in the Middle East can produce nothing but disaster for Syria.
It is time for Syria to join the new emerging Arab mainstream and allow its people the right to choose their government as we saw in neighboring Iraq and Lebanon.

Dear Mr. Metaz (Syrian Republican Party):

Your tendencies to get sidetracked from the issues in order to get personal with Joshua and his family are not only annoying, but the insulting "peasant" remark betrays your true feelings for sections of the Syrian population. Your narrow-minded stereotypes would make you a terrible future leader of Syria. You certainly wouldn't get my vote.
