News Round UP (June 2, 2006)
Russia seems to be building a naval base for its ships at Tartus:
The source in the Russian Defense Ministry noted that the facilities in Syria would allow Russia to expand its influence in the Middle East and to guarantee Syria's security. Russia plans to install an air defense system with S-300PMU-2 Favorite ballistic missiles to be operated by Russians, not Syrians, for the defense of its base. Those missiles will also provide cover for a significant part of Syria.Marwan Al Kabalan is turning into one of Syria's best analysts. His article, "Is Syria's eastward drift viable?" puts the new Russian port deal in larger context. He explains how the West has forced Syria's hand in the move east, but many Syria's are still hoping they can patch up relations with the West.
BBC reports that "Five die as Syria thwarts attack" against a building near the offices of Syrian state TV and radio. It is not yet clear why the building was attacked or what group the attackers are connected to.
In "Zarqawi Calls for Disarmament of Hizbullah: Internet Audio Message" Annahar reports that Zarqawi accuses Hizballah of acting as an Israeli agent by foiling al-Qaida attempts to attack Israel from Lebanese soil. He claimed"
"Hizbullah is an independent state inside Lebanon... It puts forth lying slogans about Palestinian liberation when in fact it serves as a security wall (for Israel) and prevents Sunnis from crossing its borders."
The Israeli Army Claims it Killed Three Hizbullah Fighters Attempting to Infiltrate during Clashes in last weekends tit for tat fighting. Two Israeli soldiers were wounded in the fighting during which Israel unleashed its fiercest artillery barrage since 2000.
In other news from Lebanon, the government has voted to spend $266 million on an international tribunal to try Hariri's killers. A judicial team that is charged with discussing the international tribunal to try those suspected of assassinating ex-premier Rafik Hariri has left for U.N. headquarters in New York. This is timed to raise Syria's blood pressure as the Brammertz report is due out in less than two weeks. Many annalists have suggested that the Brammertz report cannot be serious because few ground rules for the ensuing trial have been decided on.Issues such as the funding of the court, the applicable law, the location, jurisdiction and other details remained to be determined before concluding the agreement between the U.N. and the Lebanese government.A Syrian Lawyer has Withdrawn Lawsuits Against Jumblat and Hamadeh.
One matter of concern to the international community is the death sentence that is sanctioned under Lebanese law. Officials, including Justice Minister Charles Rizk, have said that Lebanon was willing to suspend the death penalty in this case.
In another development, the government is expected to earmark over 4 billion Lebanese Pounds ($266 million) of the national budget to cover the expenses of the U.N. commission investigating Hariri's murder.
Al-Hayat [Ar] reviews the Diaries of Meir Amit, the head of Israeli intelligence during the 1967 war, which have recently been published in Israel. He said that his proposal to extend the war for an extra day so that Israel could take the Jabal Druze from Syria and turn it into an independent Druze state was rejected by Israel's leaders. This was a lost opportunity, according to Amit. He also says that US defense minister Robert McNamara gave Israel the "green light" for its surprise attack on Egypt, Jordan, and Syria.
Another story on how the "Islamic revival spreads in Syria despite rule of secular Baath." This one is better than most and features Aleppo.

KonGratulations!
Josh, Here is another news story for you and the readers from the Kuwaiti, http://www.alseyassah.com/alseyassah. Unfortunately their links don't work the next day so I am pasting the whole store in. I don't know how credible this story is (Al Seyassah mixes hype with reality and exagarate things sometimes) but it is very dangerous and not really welcome news for Peace in Syria. It is based on some Israeli (mainly) and western intelligence reports that smugling weapons to Syria have reached dangerous and crtical levels. That Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are fedup with Syrian Regime and have opened their borders to smugling all kind of weapons to arm the internal opposition, arabic cells and the Kurds. Smugling is mainly in the Turkish/Iraqi/Syrian triangle, Daraa province near Jordan and the Syrian coast. What Syrian authorities are catching and foiling the attempts is nothing compared to what is successful. The reports claim that this is Payback for Syrian meddling in and destabalizing the neighbours states. I'll comment in next
People help me here, do you think the Seyassah article is true or at least partially or just an imagination?
Over the last year and including today (the attack in Damascus) it seems that there are more and more terrorist cells in the country. The syrian media potrays them as Islamic cells belonging to Alqaeda and Jund Al Sham, but the source is not neutral so you don't what the reality is...
All I know is that the policies of Syrian regime are so unwise by having hostile relations with Lebanon and Jordan, plus helping in increasing the violence in Iraq, turning more islamic by face and appearence of course and using what suits them to manipulate the masses, the alliance with Iran which is not helpful and get the Syrian people nothing. On the internal front, not knowing how to distinguish between people who love the country and people who want to harm it, and doing everything possible to increase the tyranny and the people frustration.
If violence starts in Syria then God help us all. It would be like Iraq now or even worse. I don't trust this regime in anything they do, including may be using terrorism as a way to attract the west sympathy. Time to stop being the bad guy in the region and open up politically and economically.
The Country is in danger so stop screwing up to keep power.
For a better Syria

Landis - At least cross check your facts before posting ludicrous information.
The international tribunal will cost some 4 billion Lebanese liras, which means 2.6 millions dollars, and not 266 millions dollars as you falsely and most likely intentionnaly claim (and no, it isn't because naharnet did check their math that you shouldn't).
Another sign that you post things without knowing what you are talking about.
No Fares, no truth to that crap. Iraq shia and Kurds are on good terms with President Assad. They do not want to see Sunni ruling in Damascus and helping fellow Sunnis in Iraq. Abdullah, like his father and granddaddy, will rather have Israeli Jews as buddies than Sunnis who will provides support to Hamas and the Moslem Brotherhood. Finally, Lebanese Druze would rather see the Devil ruling Syria than Sunnis, so as the Maronite and in a way the Shia of Hizbullah.
Smuggling been around for Millennia. An armed resistance such as the MB of the 80's will only serve the enemies of Syria. That is because there will be no clear winner in any armed conflict. It will be protracted and devastating to the economy and society. Just because there are majority of Sunni's in Syria, it does not mean that they will fight against Alawites or Baathists. It did not happen before and it is chances of happening now are slimmer considering all the geopolitical factors surrounding Syrians.
It is further determined with absolute certainty that Jews do not wants to remove the Baath from ruler ship. This is just recently documented in the media and called a change in Syria is a "KARITHA" to Israel.
America, has no will power to overrule Israeli thinking and wishes and U.K. France are no match fro China and most importantly Russia and Iran.
There is one way to bring a change to Syria, and that is to work with President Assad and get his Excellency to reform faster, giving him the united and National support needed to strengthen his reform agenda..
Dr. Landis,
As the world awaits the Brammertz report on June 15th, it is hard to argue with the fact that the Syrian regime seems to be preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.
Aligning the country’s fortunes with the East as well the domestic and regional bearded men has been one pillar of the strategy. Cracking down on the liberal wing of the domestic opposition has been the other. In effect, the regime has fastened its seat belts and readied itself for the big fight. Slowly and masterfully, the regime has turned the Hariri investigation into a big showdown between the USA/France/Israel on the one hand and Syria/Iran/Hamas/Hizbullah on the other. This has been very cleverly orchestrated indeed. Given the negative sentiment in the region towards the U.S. in particular and the West in general, the regime is sure to find a lot of supporters when it comes to this upcoming showdown. Appearing to stand up to Israel and the west has been a sure winning strategy when it comes to public opinion. Even on this forum, the majority of people seem to support this strategy. Finally, the Arab world has found someone who can stand up to this Israel/U.S.A/West axis the logic goes. Finally, we can hold our heads high as our leaders have figured out this evil plan to change this region and dominate it. Finally, the Islamic world can have something/anything to be proud of.
As to the Brammertz report, I doubt that anything will convince the diehards amongst us that the regime leadership is guilty. A proof of an underground explosion will not be sufficient. Niether would a video and audio recording of the President giving the order, as claims of Steven Spielberg’s involvement will surface minutes later. Indeed, this has been the genius of this regime. For 30 years under Assad Sr. and for 6 under Bashar it has always been about protecting this lovely targeted (mustahdafa) country. There was never a time to look in the mirror and admit our own failures as a nation. There was no time for accountability of our government officials. Anyone who raises such concerns is either an idiot who does not understand or realize what the neocons are doing or that he is an accomplice in this grand plan against this country. Discussion about civil and economic failures is boring, insignificant and petty when compared to this larger conspiracy against our people. This is what the regime wants us to appreciate and appreciate it we sure did.
With less than two weeks to go for the report, I do not think that the signs look good. The seat belt sign is on for 20 million people. The young captain of this plane is on for the fight of his life. But, he is not alone. 20 million people are also on board. They have been on a long 43-year flight. They have been fed little but for the few amongst them who have had their hand on the food cart. They will now be asked for more sacrifice as they enter this battle. In a country where the average age of the citizen is close to 60, few more years of sacrifice will translate into spending your only visit to planet earth in a sacrificial mode. What do we have to show for it is the question that begs for an answer.
"Niether would a video and audio recording of the President giving the order, as claims of Steven Spielberg’s involvement will surface minutes later."
You mean an audio and video like all those Zirqwawi Video!!! that are placed on fake Alqaida websites that are knowingly heralded in the Western media as Islamist radical sites.
You mean to tell me that for all that past time, they have such a video, even you EHSANI2 knows about it. Hummm. Yes I believe it is real one "THE GENUINE THING" for sure not Spilsberstien.
Well, one should remember that video shown on all news outlet of that thug Bin Ladin greetings fellows from Saudi Arabia and explaining to them how he had planned the operationa nd how Allah was on his side etc..etc.. remember that grainy black and white video / Audio no lighting, taken from a pee hole in someone pants, bag or whatever.
Was that fake, or was it real, if it is real, then I for sure now have the evidence that a MOLE from an intelligence agency was placed with Bin Ladin to be close to him and secretly (as the video shows) tapping it all. If this mnole was there after the terror strike, then for sure he was there before that just as well, he maybe even the one that suggested and mastered the operation, was even the link to the outside Western or Israeli operatives. Thisn about it. I dropped a lot of clues here.
The Bramertz report is completed according to teh paid price. Can't wait till those damm 15 days pass and lets see all those hopping for teh worst to find out that it was all a hoax. Or will ya take the additional 3 months extenstion as a positive sign and so as the next and the next, and the next, untill Bashar finally caugh up Saddams cash to some bottemless bank account in Katar or Dubai.
"Five die as Syria thwarts attack"
Here we go again! A stage-managed attack to draw sympathy and pretend to be a vitim of terrorism.
Those idiots in damsacus really believe they can fool the world with their amateurish tactics. They find four or five dispensable and naive thugs and lead them to their death. It is curious how they always avoid innocent civilian casualties and stage a "gun battle" near empty buildings. A black and white 1950s amateur movie of the worst kind.
What a bunch of donkeys!

Russian military denies seeking Mediterranean naval base in Syria
AFP (without subscription)
Fares,
Thanks for the link to the Weekly Standard article. Schenker's argument about Syria seemingly escaping pressure is a remarkable admission from a former Rumsfeld advisor and senior fellow at WINEP, whose Board of Advisors included Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz, that the neo-cons will simply not get everything on their wish-list. It is also a telling break from the status quo of attitudes less than 2 weeks in advance of the Brammertz report.
It is funny how L'Orient-Le Jour always uses the epithet "la majorité" when referring to the "forces du 14 Mars". Will they also write "La majorité has lost the elections today"? Or should we just call them Bolshewiki once and for all...?
Yes I made the same error than Josh, I read the naharnet article too quick.
Concerning the s-300 and the s-400, I have written a post about the capabilities of these systems and how it would hinder US/Israeli superiority. I decided not to publish it at the time (I decided it was irrelevant to my blog), but I will republish it in a few days.
Nevertheless I am surprised by this Russian harbour. It may be a hoax.
"the Syrian regime seems to be preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. "
That's the slogan of super-evil Lex Luthor in superman (seriously). Coincidence? I think not. :)
Syrian Journalist: The Syrian Media Transforms the Syrian Citizen Into an Ape
In a satirical article published in the London daily Al-Quds Al-'Arabi, Syrian journalist Hakam Al-Baba harshly criticized the poor quality of the Syrian media and its attempts to keep global media developments from influencing Syria. He also derided the censorship in the media, which he claims prevents the Syrian citizens from obtaining information and exercising free thought. He joked that the Syrian media proves that Darwin's theory of evolution can work in reverse, since it has managed to transform the Syrian citizens from human beings back into apes.
The following are excerpts from his article: [1]
"Generations of Syrians Have Spent Their Lives Hearing the Same Report on [Syrian] TV, Over and Over Again"
"Generations of Syrians have spent their lives hearing the same report on [Syrian] TV, over and over again. According to this report, their leadership spends the first 12 hours of every day receiving telegrams [of] support, gratitude and good wishes, and the remaining 12 hours meeting with various dignitaries to discuss bilateral relations, and [then] seeing them off.
"[In this report,] the [leaders always] unanimously emphasized the importance of strengthening Arab solidarity and the [need] to harness all energies in the struggle against the Zionist enemy. They also congratulated the countries of the socialist bloc, and especially our friend the Soviet Union.
"All [these] reports on Syrian TV... were [always] accompanied by calm footage of a leader with some guest, both of them wearing excessively somber expressions, and by monotonous music that lent the report a funereal air.
"When the luminaries of the Syrian media decided to progress with the times, they [reluctantly] introduced some changes into this one favorite report of theirs. They permitted the showing of the Syrian leader and his guest gesticulating [in an animated manner], in order to highlight the earnestness of the meeting, the grave importance of the issues discussed, and their fateful [significance] for the Syrian viewer...
"As another step towards media transparency, the Syrian [viewer] was introduced, for the first time in his life, to [the concept of] a press conference, in which the leader and his guest stand and answer the journalists' questions. The Syrian viewer was then filled with indescribable joy and happiness. He praised God and thanked him a thousand times for his grace, for being permitted to live long enough to witness these press conferences, which are best described as a lesson in reading, listening, and learning by rote - [like the lessons given to] elementary school pupils.
"The top Syrian media people would put their questions - which never had more than one answer - to the leader and his guest, [asking about] the correctness of Syrian policy. The leader and his guest would answer the question the way a schoolchild recites a poem or qasida [ancient Arabic poem] he has learned by heart... The questions always repeated themselves in all the press conferences, and were always asked by the same individuals - only by the top media people. They [even] read the questions from the same scraps of paper every time, and then put them back into their wallets until the next press conference..."
"The Development of Global Media... Disconcerted the Luminaries of the Syrian Media" - Since They Could No Longer Block Information Coming Into Syria
"But the immense development of the global media, and the advent of satellite channels and the Internet, disconcerted the luminaries of the Syrian media. For many years, they had been able to jam the [reception of] Jordanian TV [channels] in Damascus, and to prevent Arabic newspapers from entering Syria.
"However, since the advent of satellite channels and the Internet, they can no longer block all the media channels and all this information which comes in from every [direction], exposing the Syrians to what their eyes have never before seen and their ears have never before heard - things they never even thought of.
"[This information] has contaminated the sterilized air in the country, which had been transformed by the luminaries of the Syrian media into one big biological laboratory. In this laboratory, an unrelenting experiment was conducted, day by day, in attempt to prove Darwin's theory in reverse [by turning] man back into ape!"
The Syrian Media Tries to Keep Syrians Away From Any Information that Would Remind Them... That They Have a Brain
"The luminaries of the Syrian media faithfully did their best to continue their biological experiment on the Syrian [citizen]. They did their best to deal with the storm of media developments. They described the Al-Jazeera [TV] channel (before it was tamed) as a Zionist channel, [and said that] several of the people funding it were Israeli businessmen. They accused newspapers like Al-Nahar (before pressure was brought upon it) of isolationism.
"They combed through the Arabic dictionaries looking for all the terms that can be used to frighten the Syrians, so that they would not go near any source of information that would remind them that there is an atrophied organ in their bodies which they barely use, namely, the brain - [since] they might [actually] start to use it after more than 40 years of neglect. But [their] efforts were to no avail, and they were like people fighting the storm with a sword!
"However, they have not yet given up, [but continue] in their attempts to 'close up the sky' in Syria. More than half the sites [on the Internet] cannot be entered from Syria.
"One of the main conditions that [Syria sets] in its relations with Lebanon involves restraining the [Lebanese] media. A major part of the job of the Syrian Ambassador to Kuwait is to protest against what is published in the Kuwaiti papers. All discussions [between Syria and] Saudi Arabia inevitably include [demands to] gag the media channels funded by Saudi Arabia.
"[But] most Syrians have begun to use their brains again, and they read, follow [events], and find some way to obtain the information they desire. As for the minority of Syrians - the experiment [conducted on them by] the media luminaries has managed to prove Darwin's theory in reverse. The [Syrian] newspapers Tishreen, Al-Ba'th and Al-Thawra, as well as Syrian TV and the [web]sites Akhbar Syria and Champress [demonstrate] that man can be regressed back to his original [form], according to Darwin's theory..."

“Russia seems to be building a naval base for its ships at Tartus:”
большой, больш, Great step forward for Syrian-Russian relations and a very important and positive strategic move for Syria. Russians should be building couple more bases, one in Shatt Al Arab or Iran’s side of the Persian Gulf. This would further strengthen Russian-Iranian relations and it’s strategic positions. Another base should be positioned in Somalia. The oil grab (The Benghazi Freedom & Democracy Drive) conflict will engulf most of East Africa from Darfur to Somalia not just the Middle East. This region, in addition to Gulf of Korea (DPRK) offshore maintains large reservoir of untapped oil.
“Russia plans to install an air defense system with S-300PMU-2 Favorite ballistic missiles to be operated by Russians, not Syrians, for the defense of its base.”
The Russian still making this obsolete missile. I am worried about Syria’s future, we can easily be enslaved if this is the weapon of choice. Tell the Russian and Syrian to move on few more decades and advance that S-300 and all it’s versions with an ”ORONTIA 7” capabilities, that is a hell of a scary weapon that nothing made by man can confront it. Unless you are riding in a flying saucer and can zap it.
"Is Syria's eastward drift viable?"
Happy to see President Assad gene of shrewdity is activated. This move East should save Syria and Lebanon from the devouring murderous “desert people”, the Gypsies have murdered so many of our children for so many years.
"reports that Zarqawi accuses Hizballah of acting as an Israeli agent by foiling al-Qaida attempts to attack Israel from Lebanese soil. He claimed"
Is this some cheap classic 50 CIA-op or Rummy Pentagon 1937 style of operation! Zirqawi still alive and kicking, bashing Hizbullah and Sistani today, calling Shia worse enemy than Jews and American…Why not Dr. Mengele Rumsfeld just stand out and say it loud. We gotta to …(Squint) get these Sunni and Shia in a protracted conflict that will last longer than the one we pushed and supported Saddam with, even more bloody one, one that will just devastate the region. Will just get busy pumping the oil and cash through the Kuwaiti pipeline, even we can build one straight to Haifa. Oh well, I know Rummy from the Seventies, I remember that onion sized knot on his necktie, those seventies suits that he still wearing, those warm handshakes with Saddam, all those hugs and kisses, all those billions and the WMD. He most likely said… well just put it out there…(Squint), spreads the myth and the dummies will believe it. If they will buy Moses and the other fairy tales, if they believe and dye for a Jewish carpenter as the only begotten son of god, one who raise the dead, they will easily buy this crap.
“In other news from Lebanon, the government has voted to spend $266 million on an international tribunal to try Hariri's killers.”
That is fine if the cash is paid from Rice’s account or from those accounts that Chrac keeps all those cash handed to him for decades by Hariri and Sons and Company and Partners. If the bankrupt State of Lebanon is paying for it, that is a tragedy really. Lebanon government should be spending that cash on finding out about Hariri’s corruptions cases and all other illegal activities that sent Lebanon into 40 Billion in debt. Maybe they will recover few Billions back along with some really hard French Connections and not just pay for a U.N. Comedy show.
Satisfied, everything is according to plan. :)
One day, I will get some time to update the website and change to the new name. Have to first get that Three winged Red and Black hurricane symbol first.
