How Far Will the War be Broadened? Will the Lebanese Side with HA

Israel readying major ground offensive in Lebanon Top Israeli officials met Thursday night to decide how big a force to send in, according to senior military officials. They said Israel won't stop its offensive until Hizbullah is forced behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers north of the border – carving out a new buffer zone.

The Lebanese Defence Minister has said the country's army will join the battle, if Israel launches a full-scale invasion of Lebanon as part of its massive offensive against Hezbollah, according to ABC news.

An Israeli Defence Force spokesman, Brigadier Ido Nehushtan, says the military operation will continue until Hezbollah is destroyed.

IDO NEHUSHTAN: We have all forces - air, sea and ground, and our ground forces are ready and prepared. And as we speak, by the way, ground operations take place. On the borderline, we have no intention of occupying Lebanon. We left Lebanon six years ago, nevertheless the ground forces are ready and prepared to do whatever it takes.

BARNEY PORTER: The Lebanese Prime Minister, Fuad Siniora, has now accused the United States of encouraging Israel's offensive on Lebanon.

Israeli forces have also resumed shelling the southern suburbs of Beirut after nightfall, local time.

And it seems there'll be no immediate let-up in the violence.

Today, the Hezbollah chief, Hassan Nasrallah, emerged from hiding to declare the two Israeli soldiers captured last week will only be freed in a prisoner-swap.

Earlier this week, Israeli warplanes dropped more than 20 tonnes of explosives on a suspected Hezbollah bunker in southern Beirut, believing senior leaders of the Shi'ite group were inside, including Sheikh Nasrallah.

However, in an interview on Al Jazeera television, he's insisted the group's leadership structure is intact; that more "surprises" are in store for the Israelis, and the fate of the two Israeli prisoners is up to their government.

(sound of Hassan Nasrallah speaking on Al Jazeera)

HASSAN NASRALLAH (translated): If the entire universe comes it will not be able to take back the two Israeli soldiers, except through indirect negotiation and the exchange of prisoners.

I can confirm that Hezbollah has so far remained steadfast. It has managed to absolve the strike. It has managed to move to the stage of taking the initiative, and to offer some surprises which it always promised.

There are still a number of surprises which we reserve to ourselves in the next stage.

BARNEY PORTER: The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has criticised both sides in one of his strongest speeches since taking office.

KOFI ANNAN: While Hezbollah's actions are deplorable, and as I've said Israel has a right to defend itself, the excessive use of force is to be condemned.
Reuters reports
that elite Israeli forces are finding Hizbollah guerrillas entrenched just inside southern Lebanon a tough adversary as they try to clear them from the hilly frontier and cut rocket attacks on the Jewish state.

Hizbollah killed four Israeli soldiers in fierce clashes in the southern Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras on Thursday, Al Jazeera television said. The army has said there were eight casualties, but has not been more specific.

The army said the firefight took place not far from where Hizbollah killed two soldiers and wounded nine on Wednesday.

Michael Young of the Daily Star highlights the Lebanese lose-lose situation. He urges the Lebanese not to join the resistance against Israel and to use the war to eliminate Hizbullah military power once and for all by deploying Lebanese troops, backed up by a UN force, along the border. All the same, he fears that if the non-Shiite Lebanese sects gang up with Israel against Hizbullah this will re-ignite civil war in Lebanon. He writes:
One thing remains most disturbing. In bombing the daylights out of Shiites, while leaving Sunni, Christian and Druze areas mostly unharmed, the Israelis may have created years of sectarian resentment. Nasrallah can play on this to rouse his coreligionists out of their stupor. Look, he might say, where our fellow Lebanese were when the Israelis came after us; they criticized the resistance, and by extension all Shiites. Such thinking might help save Nasrallah's skin, but it could push Lebanon over the brink.
A number of Israelis, worried that Tel Aviv will come out the loser if it misses the opportunity to broaden the war are urging an attack on Syria.

Michael Oren, a classmate of mine from Princeton and author of "The 1967 War”, is urging war with Syria in (2006-07-20) "Attacking Syria Would Ensure Cease-Fire in North":

The answer lies in delivering an unequivocal blow to Syrian ground forces deployed near the Lebanese border. By eliminating 500 Syrian tanks -- tanks that Syrian President Bashar Al Assad needs to preserve his regime -- Israel could signal its refusal to return to the status quo in Lebanon. Supporting Hezbollah carries a prohibitive price, the action would say.

Of course, Syria could respond with missile attacks against Israeli cities, but given the dilapidated state of Syria's army, the chances are greater that Assad will simply internalize the message. Presented with a choice between saving Hezbollah and staying alive, Syria's dictator will probably choose the latter. And the message of Israel's determination will also be received in Tehran.

Any course of military action carries risks, especially in the unpredictable Middle East. But if the past is any guide and if the Six-Day War presents a paradigm of an unwanted war that might have been averted with an early, well-placed strike at Syria, then Israel's current strategy in Lebanon deserves to be re-thought. If Syria escapes unscathed and Iran undeterred, Israel will remain insecure.
American intelligence on Hizbullah is weak. Much of it comes from Israel. Anthony Cordesman says, "I'll be perfectly blunt: Israeli intelligence is political, and you can't trust it." With this warning, US papers then explain that Israel claims Hizbullah is really a Syrian and Iranian operation and not Lebanese at all.

Hezbollah nourished by Iran, Syria roots

WASHINGTON -- The Hezbollah military machine that has been attacking Israel draws much of its strength from two shadowy sources that are proving difficult to cut off: Syria and Iran.

The two countries, which President Bush blames for fomenting terrorism and destabilizing the Middle East, provide Hezbollah with training, weapons and financing, according to Western intelligence officials who are working to stem the flow of aid.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., a House Intelligence Committee member who was briefed on the Middle East situation during a recent trip to Iraq, said Syria has more than 1,000 agents in southern Lebanon, working either directly for Syrian intelligence or compensated by Syria for information. He says they are there "to cause trouble" and help prop up Hezbollah militarily.

Lebanon is two-thirds the size of Connecticut. In a country that small, Rogers said, "a thousand intelligence agents is unbelievable. It's huge."

Along with Syria's agents, Iran's well-trained Revolutionary Guard is believed to be providing military advisers to Hezbollah, with some level of coordination with Syria, according to U.S. officials and Anthony Cordesman, a Middle East expert with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the subject's sensitivity.

Cordesman said the Iranian role has evolved over time. Earlier, significant numbers of Iranians could be seen operating at terrorist training camps in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Syria provided them safe haven in the region. "Now, what you have is people who are less visible," he said.

While intelligence agencies may try to pin down such details with spies, eavesdropping equipment and overhead surveillance, the details are among any government's most classified secrets. And some of what is public may be misinformation.

"I'll be perfectly blunt: Israeli intelligence is political, and you can't trust it," Cordesman said.

The Daily Star believes Israel is losing. Its staff writers give these quotes:

"It is undeniable that Israel is in a bind. The army has again been over-confident and underestimated its abilities to break Hizbullah," said Israeli military analyst Reuven Pedatzur.

The risk now is for Israel to invade South Lebanon. That would make its troops vulnerable to Hizbullah fighters.

For the moment at least, the specter of sliding back into the quagmire of Lebanon has put the brakes on a ground offensive. Yet Olmert has approved intensified ground operations, described by the Israeli Army as "pinpoint."

General Alon Friedman said the military was "operating to destroy Hizbullah infrastructure and underground bunkers in particular," and that enough troops were on the border to launch a large-scale operation.

"Hizbullah seems to be holding strong and its morale seems intact," said Shaul Mishal, a Tel Aviv University specialist in Islamic groups. "It's an illusion to think that with force alone we can destroy the weapons of a movement like Hizbullah, which has widespread support from Shiites in Lebanon."

Israel's Haaretz daily wrote Thursday: "Despite the media euphoria and the patriotic spin, the aerial war ... is not heading for victory. In the best case, it is heading for a limited military achievement ... The air force's hammer blows are hitting Lebanon harder than they are hitting Hizbullah ... Even in the best-case scenario, Hizbullah will rise from the rubble ... One way or the other, the illusion of a magic solution is about to burst." - Agencies

During an earlier post entitled “support for US and Israel declining), t_desco ably demonstrated how the plan to attack Hezbollah could have been prepared as long as one year ago. Please forgive me for reposting the following list of questions that I had after reading the various sources behind the theory put forth:

If a person like t_desco, Seymour Hersh, Aharon Ze’evi and Trita Parsi all had a strong suspicion or inkling that “Israel set war plan more than a year ago”; the question that begs for an answer is the following:

Did Bashar, Nasrallah and Iran also know about these plans?
Did they also anticipate them? Did they plan accordingly?
Did they hedge themselves and their people accordingly?
Do they have a counter plan?
Are they likely to outfox and outmaneuver their opponents?
Have they prepared their countries economically and militarily?
In sum, did we understand how our foes think and plan and did we try to preempt them?

Only time will tell of course.

I have my own views of course. This is an occasion where I would love to be wrong.

Isreal is going to push HA back 30 Km, this will take 6-9 days,if they stop there, this will leave HA very strong in Bekaa Valley, and civil war will erupt after that, because the blame will be strong against Druze Harriri, and Jaja, in Lebanon, with defeat comes conspiracy ideas, treason, and regime changes in the arab world would be probable,I mean Syria.
If Isreali troops take over Bekaa camps, this defintely means Syria involvement, and wide spread war, devastating war is expected, including egypt Iran and jordan.
Nassrallah help may come from Iraq,However, where She-ah erupts against USA. Egypt goverment will not, repeat, will not do anything militarily now, furthermore,no one should count on regime change in Egypt, within three months.
if the Isreali HA war takes more than 7 days, then it is possible to create arab masses anger, the cosequences of which are very hard to predict, now.

This war has been planned for more than a year. It has been in the planning since 1947. The current conflict may have been technically planned for a year. The fact that the population is being driven out of South Lebanon (to the Litani) is indicative to some extent of the Israeli intention. The river does not represent a safe distance for the HA fighters. They still can get rockets that can go deepr into Israel. The previous buffer zone that Israel established in South Lebanon (and extended to the Litani) failed because they had to deal with the local population who gave cover to HA fighter. If they can succeed in driving out the locals, then a buffer zone can be a reality and the Litani can become Israel Northern Border.

Once the soldiers are in, any number of excuses can be found to keep them in and keep the Lebanese out.

I watch the washington Jornal on C-span and i am so happy to tell you of the support that Lebanon and Hizballa are getting from ordenary American ,I know Ehsani will remind us of the cogress resolution which is expected in an election year when the American candidate are looking for contributions from the jewish loby but the hostility that i see every day in this unedited program is refreshing and promising ,if the war continue for a long time i beleive the Amerrican people will get rid of the Israeli loby and Hostility toward Israel and the Jews will be significant ,so do not despair this war might be the begining of the end to Israeli expantion ,that is if the resistence continue, notice i did not say Arab resistence or countries.

I can't believe that Cole said something funny. But there aren't so much cruiseliners and the warship aren't so close to the shores since HA fired missiles at them.

Josh, non-Shia Lebanese will not side by Hezbollah. Hezbollah is fighting for foreign powers while the Lebanese army will fight (and probably lose) for the country. In Lebanon's complex politics, your enemy's enemy can be your enemy as well.

Hmmm, Professor Landis’ classmate Oren is rather optimistic by basing his “wishes” in past won wars. Undermining the enemy is the worst mistake a general can do. Certainly Syrians like Hezbollah have learned much how to fight against US made high tech army from the experiences of Serbia, Afghanistan and Iraq. What makes Oren believe that Syria would fight like it did before? Syrians certainly are not so stupid that they waste their equipment and men by bringing them to open desert and putting a sign “bomb here Israel”. What Syria fights with a more guerrilla like strategy and the war takes longer than six days?

Hezbollah has 2000 active soldiers (source ISS). Syria has an army of over 600,000 men including reserves, 4600 tanks, 130 battle helicopters, 632 aeroplanes. So far Hezbollah has performed astonishing well from a military point of view with a small and relative lightly armed force. Syrian army is without doubt many times stronger Hezbollah. What if this time Israel would not gain fast total air superiority?

From an economical viewpoint Israel can’t cope with a long war and the loss of its international reputation (the little it has left). Europe begins to be really fed up with all the trouble Israel has been causing for decades.

Israelis and their supporters in USA should stop keep dreaming about the “glory days” in 1967.

If Israel eliminates 500 Syrian tanks as mister Oren dreams, President Assad would have still 4100 tanks left. Enough to preserve the regime.

Israel's use of "BLITZKRIEG" war tactics--first, heavy aerial bombardment, then massive shelling using artillery pieces and tanks, and finally, a major push using overwhelming infantry forces--against the hapless civilans in both Gaza and Lebanon, was first used and refined by the Nazis in WW II.

It's a bit ironic that Israel, who never misses a chance to blame the world and sow guilt for what happened during WW II, uses the same military tactics that the Nazi controlled Wehrmacht employed to success 65 years ago.

Way to go Israel! You've already turned the West Bank and Gaza into concentration camps with your so-called "security fence."
Now, instead of using gas chambers for your "FINAL SOLUTION" of dealing with the Palestinians, and now, the Lebanese people, Israel uses F-16's and 155 mm artillery shells, white phosphorous and cluster bombs.
Israel must have forgot the old saying, "Choose your enemies well."

Yet another Israeli spy network discovered in Lebanon:

Lebanese intelligence arrested Israeli dormant cells

Beirut, July. 22 (BNA) Lebanese Intelligence arrested Israeli dormant cells working for years ago in Lebanon.
One of the leading figures in the dormant cells from south of Lebanon confessed that a number of these cells are in Beirut and the southern area. Lebanese daily '' Al Safeer'' quoted a Lebanese official as saying that this dormant cells were working actively. They added that they were giving special signals by advanced technical equipment to Israeli planes to select certain targets in the southern area.

Original report by As-Safir here.

Ehasani, one answer to your question could be that there was/is little they could do about it. The only person looking forward to such a confrontation seems to be Ahmadinejad (mainly for domestic reasons because he thinks that it would strengthen him and other radical elements in Iran, and perhaps also for some irrational, "millenaristic" reasons; I don't know how much one can trust the reporting in that regard).

TITLE: Hourly analysis and briefing you requested.
REPORT NO: 3890 06

4.30 AM
As long as there are traitor regimes in the Middle East like those Axis of the Devil Ammonite States of Egypt, Saudi and Jordan, the noble countries of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran and it’s people are in big danger from barbaric Jews and Christian Crusaders, the graves and oil robbers, women rappers.

Israel by itself, as an entity and military power without the Axis of Devil behind it, is a small potato, marginal and irrelevant one. Jews and Judaism are irrelevant minority on the faith of the earth and are destined shortly for extinction.

Once Egypt ruled by the Moslem Brotherhood, the whole Axis of Devil nations will fall like dominos, starting with Egypt and ending slowly but surely with the evil Yehwite clans in Palestine. A Moslem Federations of Independent States and Nationality can be formed without any obstruction whatsoever from such Crusaders backed traitor Ammonite States. The Islamic Republic of Iran, have the means to bring this to fruition and the failure to do so is a crime against all Moslems, it is a tertiary.

It is imperative for Syria and Iran to consider regime change in those Axis of Devil countries, as the first step in winning the coming Middle East war. Taking control of 70% of the worlds oil reserve or shutting its output, and controlling the most vital strategic sea locations in Suez and Bab al Mandab, controlling fully the Straight of Hermouz, these are the type of strategic options that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria should be considering.

This coming war in the Middle East is a final struggle between the Children of Darkness and the Children of Light. Between those that are diligently working to enslave mankind and number them as a numbered beasts, using a grand deceptive ideology (Christianity) concocted by the beast Amen /Marduk millennia ago, and between that value the human being as an independent sovereign entity. It is Allah’s army vs. Satan the devil army.

It is not your ordinary Six Days War, nor some dumb Gypsies shock and Awe campaign. It is a war of destiny, it is time for Bashar Assad and Mahmood Ahmadi Nizhad to understand that this is not the time to play in their people destiny. A failure of these Two leaders to see the threat, comprehend the master plot and work to nullify it is tantamount to treason.

Iran and Syria needs to see that that what some calls conspiracy theory is more like a conspiracy facts. It is already too late. Immediate mobilization required now, immediate action on the Egyptian front is a most, otherwise assured defeat for Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and all Moslems.

Cut through all the crap and secure Egypt and within days secure all the gulf oil, then bargain with the West over the miserable lives and existence of the Gypsies.

STOP WASITING TIME, stop hoping that it is not conspiracy facts and hoping it is conspiracy theories. There are those that spend a life time learning religion and are trained in religious practices, we respect that, but this is not a spiritual war, it is a material and physical war that needs the experience of those that are trained not only in religion, but in Strategies, weapon and wars. It is time for the ASKARI to take over now to win the day. Follow all that he said and ordered to the letter or slaves for the Gypsies and backers the Christian Crusaders, the little girls rappers, you shall be.

It is useless to have a cease fire now. If you evaluate the Jews previous wars and conflicts you will discover that the top of the bell curve is right on the 6 days mark. After all, we have nothing to loose and all others have everything to loose. Syria, Lebanon, Iraq have nothing to loose, they have been utterly economically, socially and humanely destroyed over and over again. Even Iran took their share of the evil West tyranny for nearly a decade. Loosing nearly half a million Iranians in an unjust war imposed on them by the West puppet regime Saddam the Beast.

Jews are cowards, weak, their cowardly campaign in Lebanon is evidence of that. The brainless idiots takes their cue from one of the most evil monsters ever born on this planet, who else Dr. Mengele Rumsfeld and evil Jewish cronies, Yep, the plotters of Iraq shock and awe Democracy camp pain that the illiterate Texan peasant and his colored ranch hand keeps on peddling even to this day, believe it or not, believe it or not. Shocking, that these ignorant think we are that stupid that we will believe them.

Coward Jews will not dare to invade Syria. And should be fooled by Geek god Yahweh ( or is it god of the geeks) to go and take the Cedar land, aggggaiiin, ( I am praying that they will do just that) they will find out how hardware in Hizbullah arsenal has dramatically improved from the 80’s stock piles. Lets talk straight, there is nothing Hizbullah dream about than a land invasion by these Jews. Doubtful, they will do that, they tried to get Omaha boys to do the walking on foot as mules for them in the Middle East. They like to drop bombs from way, way high.

A continual conflict in Lebanon, will destroy the Jews economy, demoralize them, dehumanize them ( as if they are humane in the first place) and most importantly, it will put great pressure on the Bastard Arabs that made peace with the enemy and could act as the catalyst to mobilize the streets in these countries. In fact the street, the poor, the unemployed, the disfranchised should now be organized in these countries and get ready. The Moslem Brotherhood will most likely be the one in charge of this mobilization. Freedom from Tyranny of evil ruler in the Gulf and North Africa could very well come not on the hand of the deceivers but on the hand of a great leader Mahmoud Ahmadi Nizhad and the premier Islamic ruler today his eminence Ayatollah Khemenei.

Now that the coward Jews and their western backers had proven unable or unwilling to challenge Iran, the conflict that can trigger the Islamic World Liberation from the Western Crusaders stooges could very well be this one in the land of the Cedar.

5.30 PM
Intelligence reports are surfacing that Kaddafi, Iraq’s Jewish puppet government, Mubarak and the Saudis ruling Bedouin clan, (desecrater of the haramaine), are allowing direct deliveries of Jet Fuel shipments from their refineries to Israel. Confidential sources at Aramco reporting that the massive deliveries where approved by the ruling Saudi Bedouin Abdullah to Jordan, eyewitness reports massive caravans of petrol transporters are making the speedy round trip from the Jordanian port in the Gulf of Aqaba inland to the Israeli side for the past 3 days and night, non stop.

Further information obtained from reliable sources that the delivery of Jet Fuel from the Egyptian refineries are making direct delivery to Israel. There are scant reports that shipment of Iraqi crude are currently on the way from the Turkish port to Tel Aviv. Libya’s Western Crusaders installed evil dictator Kaddafi has agreed to deliver substantial crude to be refined into jet fuel at an Israeli refinery in Haifa (Palestine). An American oil conglomerate was contracted for the massive deliveries to Israel.

There are no confirmed reports to determine if the Iraqi have knowledge of the destination of the pumped oil. However, the Saudi and Libyan were in complete knowledge and have demanded a cover. Egyptian officials, confronted with the news, claimed that the deliveries are routine and it is under previously signed Agreements with Israel. While such an Agreement is well known, it does not cover the delivery of refined Jet fuel, and at such grade that are used by fighter jets

It is now confirmed that Saudi, Egyptian and Libyan are knowingly delivering the fuel used by the Jewish enemy fighter jets that are killing thousands of Moslem men, women and helpless children in Lebanon.

I don’t know why someone keeps deleting my comment. I have not used any bad language in it.

Agree with SNP, Egypt for sure is a low hanging fruit. No doubt about that. Hundred Thousand Moslem Brotherhood members can be armed put on the streets initially, with the help of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Within hours, few Million Egyptian peasants can be armed with rifles and lead by the Moslem Brotherhood forces. It is a done deal.

This will take the pressure of the helpless and poor Palestinians and Lebanese and split the Jewish forces to worry about a far more reaching situation down south. XOM will soon telephone Cheney and tell him to ease off or else our buddies in Arabia are alone and have few hours left now.

Jordan, may be little harder because Moslem Brothers are not as numerous in Amman and local Palestinian population is pacified by the marriage to that Palestinian chick. But you do have Millions of poor and angry Palestinians languishing in Lebanon and Syria that can be armed and sent down to help the Jordanian Moslem brotherhood forces.

At the end of the day, when the dust settle, America will be happy, it will freezes all the cash, security and investments that the Bedouins stole from the Moslem Nation and, never to be ever returned again, just like the Iranian one. And they can have it all, it is a fair price for letting go with the favorites blood-suckers in the region, that the rule of which, is the source of all the terrorism and instability in the Greater Middle East region.

Iraq too will be quieter and get on the road on normalcy, now that the Saudi and other Bedouins are stateless and penniless, they can’t afford financing the Sunni insurgent in Iraq to confront Iran’s threat to them.

Lets face it, any National Government that will arise in place in the Arabian region will for sure make a more attractive oil and commercial deal with the West than this entrenched monoliths blood suckers. They may even open that Tapeline pipe line to Haifa.

It is a misnomer to think that Moslem Governments will be anti American or Anti Jewish, even Islamic Republic of Iran is not really so. Most of those in Arabia are fluent in English and hundred of thousands of the young cadre that will be running the Governments are U.S. educated.

America needs a foreign policy that is less relying on outdated gangster and occupations system and more reliant on Mutual respect and cooperation.

Would like to remind President Assad with the very first letter I sent to him in 2001. Worth reading again.
