Lebanese Anger

Someone asked why I don't discuss Syria's role in this war. Gideon Levy does just that in this fine article. Syria's policy toward Israel is simple. It will make life as difficult for Israel as it possibly can without confronting it directly, which it hasn't the power or military to do. It will support radical Palestinian organizations, Hizbullah and other opponents of Israel so long as the Golan is occupied and it hasn't reached a satisfactory peace agreement. This is not a mystery. It is what Syria claims it does. Bashar al-Asad has stated his price, which is the Golan to the 1967 borders. Syria is willing to make significant security guarantees to Israel in order to achieve this and might well accept a special regime for the strip of land running along the Syrian side of the Jordan River. Israel doesn't want to pay the price and believes it can thwart Syria's provocations at an acceptable cost.

The Lebanese have been caught in the middle of this conflict for years and are again paying the price for it. Because they have been unable to resolve their internal conflicts, they are victims of a sort. Israel has no patience for their victim hood, however. It is holding the government and all Lebanon responsible for its inability to come to terms with the Shiites. America is too. It coddled the Hariri led government for a year and then decided it could not get the task of disarming Hizbullah done, which is what Washington was interested in. Now it is in the process of destroying Hariri and the extraordinary coalition he inherited from his father along with the exemplary legacy that Hariri left - the rebuilding of Lebanon.

Clearly there are two things which the Lebanese government will have to do once the shooting stops: redefine the Shiites' position in the government in order to get them to disarm and press for a regional peace with Israel.

It is easy to understand the anger many Lebanese have for Hizbullah and Syria, which supports it. But rather than direct all their anger at Hizbullah and the Shiites of the South, who support it, they should spend their ingenuity and political capital on pressing for a region-wide resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, as Gideon Levy suggests. Only by establishing sovereign UN recognized international borders will the radicalism of the region begin to drain out of it. In the long run, this is the only solution to Lebanon's long trail of tears as the victim of the Arab-Israeli conflict. That – and renegotiating the Taif Accords.

The real estate war
Aug 7, 006 - Haaretz
By Gideon Levy

This miserable war in Lebanon, which is just getting more and more complicated for no reason at all, was born in Israel's greed for land. Not that Israel is fighting this time to conquer more land, not at all, but ending the occupation could have prevented this unnecessary war. If Israel had returned the Golan Heights and signed a peace treaty with Syria in a timely fashion, presumably this war would not have broken out.

Peace with Syria would have guaranteed peace with Lebanon and peace with both would have prevented Hezbollah from fortifying on Israel's northern border. Peace with Syria would have also isolated Iran, Israel's true, dangerous enemy, and cut off Hezbollah from one of the two sources of its weapons and funding. It's so simple, and so removed from conventional Israeli thinking, which is subject to brainwashing.

For years, Israel has waged war against the Palestinians with the main motive of insistence on keeping the occupied territories. If not for the settlement enterprise, Israel would have long since retreated from the occupied territories and the struggle's engine would have been significant neutralized. Not that a non-occupying Israel would have turned into the darling of the Arab world, but the destructive fire aimed at Israel would have significantly lessened, and those who continued to fight Israel would have found themselves isolated.

The war against the Palestinians is therefore unequivocally a territorial war, a war for the settlements. In other words, in the West Bank and Gaza, people were killed and are getting killed because of our greed for land. From Golda Meir to Ehud Olmert, the lie has held that the war with the Palestinians is an existential one for survival imposed on Israel when it is actually a war for real estate, one dunam after another, that does not belong to us.

The situation is different with Syria. For 33 years, the Syrians gave up the military effort to reinstate their occupied lands. Israel can pass a dozen Golan Heights laws to annex it, but occupied territory remains occupied territory. During those three decades, the prevailing view in Israel was that there was no need for peace with Syria: The Syrians sat quietly anyway, so why give them back the Golan?

This is the same dangerously foolish thinking that characterized the first 20 years of the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. The Palestinians sat quietly, surrendered under the Israeli occupation boot, and it did not occur to anyone to return their territory. Instead, Israel established the settlements. Only when the Palestinians woke up and realized they were going to lose their lands forever did they begin a violent campaign; and only after blood was spilled, did Israel wake up from its dreams and realize that it could not hold onto all of the territories forever. Thus, with regrettable delay and years of bloodshed, the recognition of the PLO, the Oslo accords, the disengagement and the convergence were born - all partial and fake solutions meant to postpone the end of the occupation.

We did not need all of that with the Syrians - after all, they sat quietly all of these years. Now comes the war in Lebanon and proves that this was a mistake. Although the Syrians sat on the sidelines, the danger from that direction was not removed and the delusion that the Golan would forever remain in Israeli hands, without our being asked to pay for its occupation, is now slapping us in the face.

But the current war could yet turn out to be only an appetizer for the coming wars, which will be far more dangerous. The saying that time is on our side is another delusion. The Arab and Muslim world has armed, in all of this time, and the danger of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles is already hovering over our heads. The only response to that is maximum neutralization of the flashpoints, before the bomb arrives. But Israel has chosen to close its eyes and build its future on a horrifyingly temporary quiet, or on more and more war operations.

Just when territory is losing its military importance because of the development of new fighting technology, Israel is using security excuses to stay in the territories. Former-prime minister Ehud Barak criminally missed the opportunity to sign a peace treaty with Syria after he got "cold feet," as witnesses said, and retreated at the last minute. That's how it works with us. When the other side is quiet, why return territories? And when they do go to war, "there's nobody to talk to," and certainly not while we are "under fire."

While we are ready to jump on any war bandwagon, as in this time, we endlessly procrastinate when it comes to peace negotiations. Now, too, when Syria, pushed around by the U.S., desperately wants to return to the "family of nations," is an excellent time to try to make peace with it - but there are those who say now is not the time. What will the Americans say? They, after all, are against any deals with Bashar Assad of "the axis of evil."

So, there it is, another excuse to miss a golden opportunity, another mendacious excuse. As in the case of the peace with Egypt, the move that has guaranteed Israel's security for years far more than any war, and which was put together behind the America's back, America would not be able to oppose a peace agreement with Syria. Now, after we've hit Hezbollah and ruined Lebanon, the prime minister of Israel should declare: the Golan for peace. That could contribute a lot more to our security than a thousand useless daring operations in Baalbek, but it would take a lot more courage than going off to fight another unnecessary and useless war.

Lebanese leaders telling Syrian FM unwelcome in Lebanon and should be stoned

Two interesting pictures which tell better than thousand words why Israel will not want make a peace with Syria and a two state solution.

Over half of the water Israel uses (needs) come from the occupied areas. The question is can they ever afford to give back Golan and the ground water resources of West Bank. The ground water of "original" Israel is getting saltier and saltier.

No wonder that Israel sees Litani river as a natural "barrier".

Not even selular democracy and "free trade" in Syria will not change Israel's water "problem".

So, Josh you think according to the writer of this 'fine' article that Bashar by igniting fires in Lebanon and Gaza he should be rewarded the Golan! Never mind water resources or otherwise, the principle remains Bashar is an arsonist. Therefore he does not qualify as a party to negotiated peace settlement. As to Bashar's instigating role in Lebanon, he can be assured that this is Syria's last gasp in this saga. Lebanese people of all sects including the Shia will only feel more despise at his wretched policies. Anger may give the incompetent regime some credit. For the sake of clarity and intellectual honesty, please re-title your copied article (typical Landis practice for the last three weeks) to Lebanese Despise of Bashar. By the way, the question stil stands. Do you feel mentally impaired, Josh?!

Right on Josh! I love this Gideon Levy piece--it is more or less what I have (less articulately) been saying for months now. This constant see-saw of fighting is going nowhere in the long-term.

Israel must give back the stolen, occupied and plundered Golan. It must give up the stolen and occupied West Bank for any chance of long-term peace.

SimoHurtta and others looking for Golan facts, there is a report Israel and Syria: The New Strategic and Military Realities After the Death of Hafez Assad published in 2000 by the center of strategic and international studies that goes into some of the Golan details.

I have not gotten a chance to read the entire report so cannot vouch much for it--and I do not know the political leanings of the CSIS, maybe somebody else can give me a heads up on that.

1)In order to get the Golan back Syria has to negotiate a peace treaty with Israel. However they refuse to recognize Israel as a soveriegn country. Hence no Golan for them.

2) Syria can't even bring themselves to recognize Lebanon as a soveriegn country. According to them it's still part of Syria.
Thus when they say Shebaa farms belong to Lebanon they are saying it belongs to a part of Syria. For them to really cede Shebaa farms to Lebanon they would have to recognize Lebanon's soveriegnty first, and they no intention of doing that. They may be lying malicious bastards, but they are sneaky.

3) Gordon Levy has clearly never heard of Chamberlain or the Sudentenland. Anyone who quotes him must be just as ignorant.

Aside from the usual omissions and falsehoods, a fine post.

I do not know how Israel could be so short sighted to think that with militery power it can dictate the peace arrangment ,the area is moving toward the Islamists for the disadvantages of Israel and all minorities in the area ,somtime i wonder if the American gov plan is not the destruction of Israel hoping for the Messaia to return .

From Philip I []

Which Syrian would not wish for the immediate return of the Golan? For all the leverage that Syria claims to have over militant/resistance groups, I cannot see this happening for two reasons:

1) The arguments that Levy and you make for the return of the Golan in exchange for greater regional security miss a key point. The Iraqi Shia are now the big bargaining chip, not Hizbullah and not Hamas. Iran will use them to thwart American plans for turning Iraq into a client state. Moreover, they could be supplied with long range missiles and become a threat to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. US neocons may be at one with Israel with regard to Hizbullah, Hamas and the annexation of occupied lands but they have a much more serious problem on their hands in Iraq, which they themselves have unleashed.

2) When Israel declares openly that she prefers to have next door a secular dictator rather than a democratic Islamic fundamentalist, she is really saying that she prefers a secular dictator that is unable to defend his land and cannot cause much trouble any more.

Syria will never become a strong nation without democracy, the rule of law and high productivity. Until then Israel will just be enjoying the land and waters of the Golan.

The True Friends of Lebanon are countless. The lure of Beirut is irresistible. Poets sang its praises but never reached its soul. The city that defied death over and over again will never bow to despots. From the ashes it will rise and fly higher and higher. It will then descend on Bashar the Mosquito and will pluck him out like a piece of dirt and dumb him into the lowest pit of the dustbin of history.

Mikealpha I'm not sure how you frame your argument, but that is a horrendous analogy you are implying between the Golan and Sudetenland.

Philip I, but Syria can never be a strong democratic nation with rule of law and high productivity with out first having the Golan returned. The missing Golan and lack of peace with Israel justifies the Emergency Law in place that stifles all forms of progress and internal dissent.

How did West germany mange to rise from the ashes without East Germany and with the Communist "threat" looming large at its borders for 40 years?

Many democratic countries can declare a state of emergency without holding a gun to the head of each their citizens.

What Syria needs is not a state of emergency but a strong professional army. The Assads have deliberately undermined it, for fear of a coup, by establishing clandestine military and intellegence parallel networks.

The Golan is irrelevant to how Syria chooses to rule itself.

I frame ny argument thus:

Giving a facist (the Baath party is an arab imitation of National Socialism) dictatorship (Syria) what it claims it wants (the Golan) often brings on the very war the gullible giver (Gideon Levy) seeks to avoid.

As my good pal Winston says, speaking of Chamberlain: "He was given a choice betwen war and dishonor. He choose dishonor and he will have war anyway."

However Winston could just as well be speaking to our HARIBU gypsy friend, Gideon.

true facts,

I had an A in the last history class I had attended and I still could not digest Mikealpha's argument. Why?
1- If Syria recognizes Israel on Wednesday marning say , would Isreal return the Golan Hights? Is the true problem between Syria and Israel the ten or twenty or thirty kilometers kept them far apart at the last negotioating round ? I do not think so. It is the definiton of the geostrategic sphere of influence of each country which played the majore role I think. Golan, as a peice of real estate is important, water and all, but at a time and age when tiney Ketusha's make over 2 million Israelies spend endless nights in shelters, then those few kelometers are of no real significance. THe True question is that you have to mini super powers, Syria and Israel trying to consolidate their positions at the table. Israel, backed by the unlimited support of the US military thought they could hold on to the Golan for a few more years. Syria realised this and counted on other changes taking place and bringing Israel to give up its occupation of Golan. And we are watching what the result is. Syria did manage to achieve Strategic Detternce, Israel managed to run away from Lebanon in 2000, Gaza in 2005 and so on and so on. Strategically, Syria is wining. And if you count on what is "reallu" happening in Iraq, then Israel's position is getting rosier by the day.
2- FYI, Syria does not claim that Lebanon is part of it. Politically, geographically, or otherwise. That is a broken record by now, so let us get it behind us. Now if Syria sees that Lebanon is falling into the anti-syria camp, then Syria being the closeset next of kin is the one most entitled to have its say there. Like it or not. But that is a diffrent story.
3- If you think that Syrian's will direct all thier energies to Development, rule of law, productivity, being nice to the US & company, with all this while the "small" Golan Hights is still occupied, then you need to do some readings about many national concepts, and many factors that affect the development and the directon in which nations go, least of all: the principale of Territorial Integrity. Especially when the talk is of piece of the heartland "stolen" -and by a honest, peace loving, guided missiles country called Israel.
Any way, do not bother, the Israelies with their IAF and IDF -and support staff at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in DC, not in Israel- are learning and begining to realise this on thier "own":Snin, Taba, Ramallah, Jherico, Nablus, Jenin, Gaza, South Lebanon, etc and so on and so on...Actually, the pros and cons of whole Israeli project is under questioning.
No big deal really, it has just taken them few tens of years and few tens od dead soldiers and useless wars...

There is no need to lecture who claims to have an A grade in history without understanding the clear analogy. In this case the students may have to go back for intensive studies in order to ingrain him with the proper understanding.

There is also no need to argue with someone who continues to hold in his sick mind rejected theories of so-called spheres of influence. AlMoallim was kicked out from Lebanon exactly for this attitude. Syria must learn to confine itself to within its borders and forget about any outside extensions to its bickering. All Syria's neighbors are demanding the same and thanks to current US administration for being resolute in enforcing a strict policy of isolating the Syrians. When the dust settles, Lebanon will sign a peace treaty with Israel whether Syria likes it or not!!!

Such wishfull thinking!!!!!

Syria is more likely to have that treaty than lebanon. And if Lebanon gets a treaty....for a few days... it will die in the meatgrinder of political chaos there. As well....any foreign multinational military force..will also die in the meatgrinder of ongoing guerilla resistance.
With our collective A in history we should be able to remember back just a couple of when this plot was run before. the outcome will be the same.

Philip: Fair enough argument, you do make a good point there. (and the Assads have also deliberately undermined Syrian education as well but that’s another story...) But I don't completely agree--I still believe the Golan is key. Once its back, everything will open up.

Mikealpha, where do I begin with your horrible analogy? (which is still unclear by the way) Lets see--did the Czechs launch a war against Germany and capture, annex and occupy the Sudetenland? No don't think so.

Hitler wanted the Sudetenland to fill his territorial ambitions, a 'lebensraum' (living space) for his people--and his claim was that the German speaking minority of the Sudetenland asked for his help. There is no territorial ambitions with Syria--Syria only wants its occupied lands returned. It is a completely different case.

With the Sudetenland, it was a concession to a great military power to avoid a general war. With the Golan, Syria is hardly a great military power, and returning the Golan would not be a concession but rather it would be following UN Resolutions 242 and 497. Right--everyone loves following UN Resolutions NOW all of a sudden--in particular 594. Why did we skip over 242 and 497??

I can go on and on about the differences and how the analogy fails. But I don't have that much time and I think I made my point.

Ausamaa, I also got A's in all my history classes! I agree with your points and will also mention that you say Israel wanted to hold on to the Golan for a 'few more years'. Well, I say no need to sugar-coat it: Actually they have already annexed it and plan on holding on to it forever really if people like Sharanksy had their way. (According to Clinton, Sharanksy saw no reason to ever give back the Golan--there is no pressure to do so!)

True Facts--I didn't realize the concept of 'Spheres of Influence' is now rejected. Care to expand? And when the dust settles there is no chance Lebanon signs a peace deal with Israel without Syria. For the record, that’s my bold prediction.

And true facts, I have already gone into what my views are concerning the Golan and democracy (that's why I didn't expand), I will repost it once I find it in my next comment. Or I will rewrite something. Its late so not sure what. And I hope to remind everyone (including myself at times) to be mindful of ad hominem attacks: A poor understanding of English does not necessarily equate to a poor understanding of history.

Robert Fisk: A Nato-led force would be in Israel's interests, but not Lebanon's
Published: 01 August 2006

Every foreign army - including the Israelis - comes to grief in Lebanon.

So, how come George Bush and Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara - after their inevitable disasters in Afghanistan and Iraq - believe that a Nato-led force is going to survive on the south Lebanese border? The Israelis would obviously enjoy watching its deployment - it will be time for the West to take the casualties - but Hizbollah is likely to view its arrival as a proxy Israeli army. It is, after all, supposed to be a "buffer" force to protect Israel - not, as the Lebanese have quickly noted, to protect Lebanon - and the last Nato army that came to this country was literally blasted out of its mission by suicide bombers.

How blithely the US and British governments have erased the narrative of the old Multinational Force - the MNF - which arrived in Beirut to escort Palestinian guerrillas out of Lebanon in August of 1982 and then, after the massacre of up to 1,700 Palestinian guerrillas at the Sabra and Chatila camps by Israel's proxy Lebanese militia, returned to protect the survivors and extend the sovereignty of the Lebanese government.

Does that sound familiar? And they also came to train the Lebanese army - one of the missions being foisted on the new Bush-Blair army - and they failed. Blown up by suicide bombers at their Beirut headquarters with the loss of 241 American lives, the US Marines retreated into the ground, digging earthworks beneath Beirut airport.
And there they lived until the newly-trained Lebanese army broke apart in February 1984 - at which point, President Ronald Reagan decided to "redeploy" his troops offshore. Like other famous historical redeployments - Napoleon's redeployment from Moscow, for example, or Custer's last redeployment - it represented a national disaster, a colossal blow to US prestige in the region and a warning that such Lebanese adventures always end in tears. The French left shortly afterwards. So did the Italians. A company of British troops had been the first to scuttle out.

So, how come anyone believes that the next foreign army to arrive in the Lebanese meat-grinder is going to be any more successful? True, the MNF was not backed by a UN Security Council resolution. But since when were Hizbollah susceptible to the UN? They have already failed to disarm - as they were required to under UN resolution 1559 - and one of the world's toughest guerrilla armies is not going to hand over its guns to Nato generals. But most of the force will be Muslim, we are told. This may be true, and the Turks are already unwisely agreeing to participate. But are the Lebanese going to accept the descendants of the hated Ottoman empire? Will the the Shia south of Lebanon accept Sunni Muslim soldiers?

Indeed, how come the people of southern Lebanon have not been consulted about the army which is supposed to live in their lands? Because, of course, it is not coming for them. It will come because the Israelis and the Americans want it there to help reshape the Middle East. This no doubt makes sense in Washington - where self-delusion rules diplomacy almost as much as it does in Israel - but America's dreams usually become the Middle East's nightmares.

And this time, we will watch a Nato-led army's disintegration at close quarters. South-west Afghan-istan and Iraq are now so dangerous that no reporters can witness the carnage being perpetrated as a result of our hopeless projects. But, in Lebanon, it's going to be live-time coverage of a disaster that can only be avoided by the one diplomatic step Messrs Bush and Blair refuse to take: by talking to Damascus.

So when this latest foreign army arrives, count the days - or hours - to the first attack upon it. Then we'll hear all over again that we are fighting evil, that "they" - Hizbollah or Palestinian guerrillas, or anyone else planning to destroy "our" army - hate our values; and then, of course, we'll be told that this is all part of the "War on Terror" - the nonsense which Israel has been peddling. And then perhaps we'll remember what George Bush senior said after Hizbollah's allies suicide-bombed the Marines in 1982, that American policy would not be swayed by a bunch of "insidious terrorist cowards".

And we all know what happened then. Or have we forgotten?

True Facts,,,

There is an allergy medicine to deal with your way of approaching the Syria-Lebanon hate-fear relationship which you seem to suffer from: the first is called Xanax and it does help those with severe depressions and symptoms of over-anexity, the second is called Hassan Nassralah (i.e. HA/Syria/Iran). Both are easily availlable at your nearest drugstore. The first keeps you under certain illusions untill you become an addict, the second helps see the light fast, especially if taken with a pill of Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia... you know the list.

As to Mr. Waleed Al Muaalim, he was not not "kicked out of Lebanon by you guys", Syria did get out of Lebanon under 1959. Sure. What you missed then and realise now, is that Syria got out before you knew it ONLY for the "foxy" reason of leaving your bunch, Rice, Chirac and Harriri, (and Israel, should all else fails) deal with Hizbullah on thier own once the time for that comes. Which is now.

Keep a keen eye on TV and learn the things you missed in history classes. The first of these lessons is that you do not "brag" about signing a peace treaty with Israel, just because you are upset with Syria. The second thing is Syria, and the true Lebanese would NEVER allow that to happen, even if Israel wanted to do it (and do not forget the half million Palestinian who have been in your Diyafa for the last 50 years).

What is more? Appearing on Lebanese TV, Al Moualim actually looked "fine, comfortable, in control, and among friends yesterday)Did you notice that???

And be carefull with Al Mualim, while might not be the confrontational brand, Al Shar'a was, Al Mualim is of the similar breed! Remember when visited Bierut last, back in 2005 or 2004, and was kissed and welcomed by everyone? Some journalist asked him why he "refrained" from visiting "certain" Lebanese chieftains. Do you recall how he "diplomatically" answered that he wants to visit more but: " I have just assumed this responsibility (Syrian-Lebanese relations) just recently, and believe me, I have ELEVEN oyher files on my desk. But the time will come when I will be able to visit with many of our Lebanese friends" end of Al Mualiym answer..!If you have still not got it, HE meant that YOUR WHOLE LEBANESE CASE is one of ELEVEN OTHER files. In other words that is importance he assigned to the whole Lebanse file.Got it NOW.???? Strange how this BUN was lost on all your smart free media then!

Tease you more??? It seems that it is becoming apparent to many people now that Syria will always remain next to Lebanon, be it in the good sense that most Syrians take it as a really big Arab brother, or be it in the bad sense of the nightmare few Lebanese -and their not so dependable or capable friends- who still can not get used to the facts of History and Geography.

I am trying to cut down on smoking and becoming a more healthy person, why do you not adopt such a positive -but mental- attitude and start recognising that the bombs that is killing your people are not originating in Syria, but from your beloved Israel, via caring the US Admin, and that neither of those two count on or give a real damn about your beloved Lebanon. Or do you really believe that stuff that LEBANON is a trully special case.

It [Syria] will make life as difficult for Israel as it possibly can without confronting it directly, which it hasn't the power or military to do.

You forgot to add that the Baathists will also make life as difficult for Syrians and Lebanese without "confronting it directly".

Let us inform your readers the WHOLTE truth, shall we Dr. Landis?

Also, let us remind your readers that Israel GLADLY returns land for peace. Eygpt, Jordan, and even Aza and Southern Lebanon.

Your horse hockey notwithstanding, Syria was never interested in peace. They, like Arafat, survive on chaos, support of terror, and anything else that directs the "Arab street" outward and not inward.

EngineeringChange, you did a great job at deconstructing the Golan-Sudetenland analogy, but you forgot to mention that the "Chamberlain/appeasement" argument has been a staple of Israeli propaganda for many years now. I've seen it repeated ad nauseam by Israeli politicians, so we should be very aware where this argument is coming from.

Anybody who thinks that the Golan-Sudetenland analogy is "very clear" does not even deserve a D in history, IMHO. The same goes for the idea that the world is being ruled by "sick minds" (as most if not all governments, including all Western governments, still do think in terms of "spheres of influence").

I also do not think that any analogy to postwar Germany is very useful: there are just too many differences.

In general, for a better understanding of the pitfalls of this way of thinking, I highly recommend Prodiges et vertiges de l'analogie by Jacques Bouveresse.

It is funny to see Walid Jumblatt being referred to as "Lebanese leaders". After all, it has some truth to it, given that he seems at times to be showing symptoms of MPD.

I stand by my analogy. Somehow because Assad doen't speak German you think the situation isn't in any way analogous to the start of the 2nd world war. I do.

The lesson of the Sudentenland is that:

1) You can't believe a word a facist dictator says nor can you have any faith in any document a facist dictator signs.

2) Giving in to facist dictatorships encourages them to make even more trouble and cause yet more deaths and destruction.

Now lets turn our attention to Syria:

3) The Baath party was inspired by and modelled upon the German National Socalist party.

4) The Baath party rules Syria.

5) It follows from 3 & 4 that Syria is a facist dictatorship.

Thus lesson of the Sudentenland is applicable. Q.E.D.

Syria is making quite enough trouble now. The missiles that are causing Israel to attack Lebanon originate from or transit through Syria. Syria harbors terrorist scum no other country (except Iran) will touch.

I and other sane individuals prefer not to see Syria, under it's present government, emboldened.

If the Syrian government wants the Golan back let them sue for peace. They started a war which they lost. They have to say "we're sorry, we promise to be good and can we pleace have our land back". They have to recognize Israel as a sovereign state. But then they reveal weakness and fallibility. The populace might not be quite so terrified of them. Consequently this is something Assad will never do. So no Golan for for the dictator who looks like he is part giraffe.

Dr. Wafa Sultan on Islam and Muslims

What does the Arabic word jihad mean?

One answer came last week, when Saddam Hussein had his Islamic leaders appeal to Muslims worldwide to join his jihad to defeat the "wicked Americans" should they attack Iraq; then he himself threatened the United States with jihad.

As this suggests, jihad is "holy war." Or, more precisely: It means the legal, compulsory, communal effort to expand the territories ruled by Muslims at the expense of territories ruled by non-Muslims.

The purpose of jihad, in other words, is not directly to spread the Islamic faith but to extend sovereign Muslim power (faith, of course, often follows the flag). Jihad is thus unabashedly offensive in nature, with the eventual goal of achieving Muslim dominion over the entire globe.

Jihad did have two variant meanings through the centuries, one more radical, one less so. The first holds that Muslims who interpret their faith differently are infidels and therefore legitimate targets of jihad. (This is why Algerians, Egyptians and Afghans have found themselves, like Americans and Israelis, so often the victims of jihadist aggression.) The second meaning, associated with mystics, rejects the legal definition of jihad as armed conflict and tells Muslims to withdraw from the worldly concerns to achieve spiritual depth.

Jihad in the sense of territorial expansion has always been a central aspect of Muslim life. That's how Muslims came to rule much of the Arabian Peninsula by the time of the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632. It's how, a century later, Muslims had conquered a region from Afghanistan to Spain. Subsequently, jihad spurred and justified Muslim conquests of such territories as India, Sudan, Anatolia, and the Balkans.

Today, jihad is the world's foremost source of terrorism, inspiring a worldwide campaign of violence by self-proclaimed jihadist groups:

The International Islamic Front for the Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders: Osama bin Laden's organization;
Laskar Jihad: responsible for the murder of more than 10,000 Christians in Indonesia;
Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami: a leading cause of violence in Kashmir;
Palestinian Islamic Jihad: the most vicious anti-Israel terrorist group of them all;
Egyptian Islamic Jihad: killed Anwar El-Sadat in 1981, many others since, and
Yemeni Islamic Jihad: killed three American missionaries on Monday.
But jihad's most ghastly present reality is in Sudan, where until recently the ruling party bore the slogan "Jihad, Victory and Martyrdom." For two decades, under government auspices, jihadists there have physically attacked non-Muslims, looted their belongings and killed their males.

Jihadists then enslaved tens of thousands of females and children, forced them to convert to Islam, sent them on forced marches, beat them and set them to hard labor. The women and older girls also suffered ritual gang-rape, genital mutilation and a life of sexual servitude.

Sudan's state-sponsored jihad has caused about 2 million deaths and the displacement of another 4 million - making it the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our era.

It looks that Assad has miscalculated again. It is evident that this war will be won "diplomatically' against HA. Syria is in danger also. The problem is that, as much as I hated the Assad regime, and still do despise it, I am fearful of what is coming next. I am sure that the MBs are waiting for their opportunity now, and if they ever get power, the Syrian people will be more oppressed and masacred than this regime has done throughout.

I simply despise what ever is Islamic in the form they have shown us.

If there is some "peace" deal that is actually ever negotiated, it will not include any syrian access to water. I think that should be cleared up because if i was israeli, i would never give up my monopoly on the water.

The Sudetenland problem was created already before Adolf Hitler. I actually know rather much of it because my mother’s family (Austrian Germans) was thrown out of Sudetenland where they had been farming land for generations after WW1 when Austrian empire collapsed. The ethnic cleansing of Sudetenland begun already a decade before Fascism emerged. Sadly Europe is full of equal areas, where people live in a “wrong” country.

I can’t see any analogy with the Sudetenland and Syria’s Golan. First Israelis had not lived in Golan when Israel occupied it in a war she started. Secondly Syria is far from the mighty Germany. Actually if there would be any analogy then the little aerial superpower Czechoslovakia would have had to occupy areas from Germany and Austria in war it started, which then the Fascist Germany tried to get back.

I do not understand what are “the aerial dreams” some commentators claim Syria having. What I can see is a little country which calls it self democratic (which is joke unless democracies can have millions of people living in Bantustans under military occupation without rights) attacking continuously its more or less democratic neighbours. Syria did not “occupy” even Lebanon in the same violent manner Israel did. Without doubt Syria interfered in Lebanon’s internal politics, but it would be extremely naïve to claim that Israel, USA and France did not do the same.

Mixing “democracy and free-trade” and peace between nations is extremely far fetched. Israel could make peace with Egypt and there is no big difference between Syria’s and Egypt’s ruling style, not when the peace treaty was signed and now. So peace between nations even in Israel’s case doesn’t depend on the democracy level of countries. The simple truth is that Israel has something it wants (and needs) – Golan and its water. Even if Syria would be ruled by American Syrian Republican free trade experts, secular naturally, it is obvious that Israel would give back Golan only if gets guaranties that it gets all (or at least the majority) of the water flowing from Golan to the Sea of Galilee. The water Syria needs desperately for its own development.

“Democracy and free trade” and peace have nothing to do with what Israel wants and what it has done. The modern Israel is built on the resources it gets from the occupied areas and on the benefits of the constant military tension. The water got from the occupied areas have made possible to create water intensive industries and agriculture. The military tension has enabled a steady flow of “free” capital from USA and made possible to create a vitally important military and security industry.

Let us imagine Israel without halve of the water it is used to consume and in peace with all neighbours. It would create a drastic drop in living style and income levels. No more money flowing from USA’s budget. Military cluster would gradually shrink in lack of an own test firing ground.

Al-Moallim turns into a black goat in Beirut...

It will never happen. It never happened in the past 4000+60 years and will not happen in the future. That is because you are dealing with Two important obstacles. First, you are dealing with Judaism and Jewish backward inhumane mentality. An irrational, fatalistic destructive Semitic mentality. (Yes proudly say, Semites are not my favorite). For 4000 years, it did not evolve one bit. As today Israel’s genocidal actions proves.

Second, under no circumstance would Christians in the West and Islamo-Bedouins in Arabia will permit such a peace to exist. There are no advantages for these players to see the Levant evolving into the kind of powerful, industrially, economically and socially strong region.

Islamo-Bedouins, will create all sorts of radical violent Islamic groups to saw hatred and mayhem and the Christians in the west will place all type of obstacles against Israel for making such a peace. They will even attempt to do the same thing they done to Iraq WMD and Iran’s Nuclear program. They will immediately demand that Israel hand it’s nuke forthwith or face an invasion not only by some U.N. mandated force, but with help from Russia and the Islamo-Bedouins. They will go to that length to fight for the Oil resources they are now attempting to control.

It is inconceivable short of an all out World War that the Christian West will permit peace to exist in the Middle East. More than Sixty years of planning and scamming spent on insuring that today’s Middle East is just like you see it, by design.

It would be a revolution if one day some leader in Israel will gain consciousness, realize, that the Jews in Israel are being scammed, framed up and put up to the task of servitude
to someone else interests, decides to fight not for Exxon-Mobil but for the Jews, like Rabin did. Unfortunately, the Christo-Zionist capitalists in the West that benefits tremendously in economic terms from the servitude of the Jews in Israel, will find another Amir Assassin to take care of that awakened Israeli Leader or sponsor a NothinYahoo to break and dissolve the Israeli Government as they did in the past.

Will have peace, oil and water, but first we have to go though an Armageddon, it is the only way to defeat the Children of Darkness and evil ones and allow the Children of Light to finally rule in Peace.

Israel, a Peace Loving Nation???

This war has nothing to do with Syria policies and everything to do with
Israel's agression and jealousy , but more importantly the sheer numbers of
Lebanese orators  .
From ordinary citizens to parliamantary representative each one has a
distinctive opinion about who is right and who is wrong, and what should be
done, all this, while the country is under indiscriminate attacks from an
agressive enemy .
Unfortunately, the Lebanese have learned little from the long wars they
have been through . Seems like the Lebanese will blame everyone else but
themselves .
Neither Syria nor Iran  -the highest on the list of animosity for the time
being - neiter the US and its proxy Israel, nor France will have been able
to mendle in your country , were you united .
Thinking that turning to the west and the rest -Israel, Syria, saudi Arabia,
Egypt you name it -will bring you a solution .
Your problems are internal, you are one people with 16 diffrent religions
and sects, but, one destiny . I have a solution for your, what seems like an
eternal problem . UNITY .
Your unity is your nuclear power . And our unity as Arabs is even a greater
power .
May this war be the last, the Shiite are there to stay, and the
Palestinians, will have a homeland soon . Please take care of the new
refugees of Lebanon, the million plus, that are the result of a friendlier
foe .
The friendly foe contacted my relatives in Lebanon and assured them safety .
Divide and rule .

Gideon (a gypsy Habiru) and Landis approach and solutions are rather naïve. It is based on flawed assumptions, and not accounting for all other actors and factors at play in this great conflict playing out in the Middle East that is the prelude to Armageddon. If you have any doubt about it, read the bible lamentations of Lebanon at the start of the great battle at the end time.

First lets clear one myth out of the way, that Syria do not have the military to win a war against the murderous outlaws gypsies criminals that are illegally occupying parts of Southern Syria (Palestine) and the Syrian Golan. The facts is, Syria can in less than 6 months possess a superior defense systems than those in the arsenal of the evil Jews and the United States. It can vastly outnumber them combined in foot soldiers, tanks and quantity of sophisticated weapons deployed that will render most of HABIRU occupiers and America’s weapons obsolete. Just as recently Hizbullah demonstrated by destroying a sophisticated warship on Beirut offshore that is equipped with the latest defensive technologies. That missile used by Hizbullah, having only the rudimentary advances incorporated to its guidance was effective in disabling the HABIRU warship. What will a fully developed missile of this type be able to destroy, an aircraft carrier perhaps, for sure, taking with it untold lives and an immense monetary damage in the Billions of Dollars for the cost of the carrier and the hundred fighter aircrafts it carry onboard. The missile used was practically “antique” in comparison to what Syria or Iran can produce at cheap, I mean cheap price, incredibly sophisticated systems. Israel will have ZERO chance of winning a war against Syria alone. The U.S and the Evil Jews entire missiles, air power, and anti missile systems can be rendered worthless for less than 50 million dollars investment.

Now that we blown this myth away, lets discuss the main issue.

As said before, Gideon and Landis were way off the mark. This is not a war between Hizbullah with backers and Israel, nor it is a proxy war between Syria / Iran and Israel. This is a proxy war between the Neocon Zionists, oil / banking interests, Christian Crusaders, Arab traitor regimes, all together aliened with each having own convoluted interests against Iran. Bastards, traitors, illegitimate Arab regimes of Egypt, Jordan, Bedouin Arabia wants to weaken Iran and stop Iranian incursion into the Islamic world to free Moslems from their oppressive rule, uses the oil cash for development and not lust. Zionists in America wants to destroy Iran’s Defenses and Nuclear installation to protect Israel, their project that Yahweh anointed them to manage. Christians, knows this is an Armageddon and that is what they wants, the rapture, and meeting their Lord and savior, the son of god Jesus the Christ, when haven open during Armageddon and join him with the dead saints that have risen in Christ, in his glorious descent to rule the earth with a rod of iron. Pentagon head, dr. Mengele Rumsfeld, wants more genocides and an opportunity to compensate for his sexless life and inferiority complex by more Shock and Awe campaign, Secret Prisons, torture, rape and watching infants lifeless on his favorite big screen LCD screen that he got from the company he ran few years ago. Cheney and XOM Chairman, just wants the fucking oil in Iran, regardless of how many Iranian remain alive. Cheney biggest concern is that the Iranian population will not have a chance to relocate to the Ahwaz region, near those gas and oil reserves, whereby Nuking the region, will make it expensive, considering the radiation contamination near those oil and gas fields and the future XOM reserves that are now, as he (Cheney) considers it and Evil, illegal and criminal act of Satanic nature that these reserves are owned and run by the National Iranian Petroleum Organization. The Rockefeller and his chain of Federal Reserves Banks, just wants some of the cash allotment from the shady oil loot of Iran’s oil revenue that can not be laundered through Audi Bank in Lebanon.

Israel in this case really has no interest in this conflict whatsoever. It is providing an ordered room service, serving all the others “the plotters”, doing the job intended for it from the time of the Belfour declaration, to be used as a mean by which the Christian Crusaders will control both the Jewish menace they suffered from and the entire Middle East Oil resources.

Let’s examine Israel interests here. Are Israeli generals and strategists, intelligence and political leaders that ignorant to even think that they can wipe Hizbullah out or even bring it on its knees, disarm it? If that is what they thought and planned for, then what a sad bunch of idiots are running Israel.

Did they really think that Dr. Mengele Rumsfeld Shock and Awe illegal genocide campaign will force the Shia in Lebanon to surrender, did the plotters and executor of this war crimes think they will not face an International Tribunal one day, near in the future, charged with crimes against humanity. If they did not, then what sad bunch of loonies, blinded by false sense of power and greed.

From the time of its recent existence in 1948 (Israel as state never existed before, except in Jewish fictions and fables), it never knew one day of peace. Its people HABIRU, a collection of Aramaic and Canaanite lower classes and outcasts that lived entirely as nomadic criminals, murderers and thieves for hire, never knew one day of peace for millennia’s. The promised hope that these wondering HABIRU gypsies will one day have a nation they dreamed and fanaticized about, wrote volumes of fiction books, detailing their aspiration and fictionalizing history for the descendant will one day end by the Modern State of Israel, only to spend every day of it’s existence at war is the most pathetic history of any people who walked this earth.

From the beginning of this Zionist idea, the Jews took the Christian Colonialists bait (the Belfour Declaration), they would have been welcomed in the region of the Middle East and Islamic world, including Iran and even Mecca. They would have lived a normal life, like any other people living now in the region. Just like the Moroccan Jews living and just like in Syria and Lebanon, Turkmen, Armenians, Cherkassy, Caucasians, live and work enjoyably. Jews could have done the same after the First World War.

But they did not, they took the bait, went on a typically Jewish shock and Awe campaign in Palestine, committing atrocities, war crimes and genocides against innocent people and are still doing it to this very day.

Jews were cheated by Christo-Jewish Zionists who were, and still are, in cahoots with Jewish Bankers and Colonialists Europeans who later sold the Jewish Card Trick to the Rockefellers in America. They found themselves serving the French and British Colonialists in 1956 to attack Egypt and help the French Suez Company regain control of the Canal.

Today, they are serving not their own interests, but those of the same Colonialists, although they are now living on the other side of the Atlantic. Lets imagine that they serve own interests and those of their people inside Israel. Having peace with Iran, a country that once freed their ancestors from Amen-Marduk Babylon. Peace with Syria, and Lebanon. One can only imagine, were there none of the genocides the Evil Jews committed what kind of progress the Middle East would have. Any sane person, a moral and sane leader will understand that the only way to live and build a lasting country, one that is longer than my grandmother age, will have to rely on friendship, peace, cultural exchange and development, economic and military cooperation, strategic alignment with the region nations and countries and against outside colonialists. Israeli corporations would be venture capital partners in corporations based in Damascus, Beirut and Tehran.

Instead, Israel, since it’s establishment, engage in none of the above mentioned efforts and has constantly engaged with only one effort with its neighbor states and people, that one effort is CIMINAL GENOCIDE and SERVISE TO COLONIALISTS” the very same colonialists that have incarcerated them and segregated them from their societies and for centuries deprived them of basic rights. How does this stand against the region countries benefited Jews and the Israeli.

Today genocide in Lebanon, is no different, than before, to serve the interests of colonialists. Today Israel is serving the interests of a George Bush and Company oil grab wars, for sure not its own interests. In fact, this foolish endeavor, as many in the past the Jews have embarked on, will as before ends in their expulsion from the region back to the tyranny they will face in the near future in the countries of the same colonialist they have served well and ended up paying the price.

Today they are loosing souls of their young and murdering Lebanese children not to protect own national interests but that of Shell oil, XOM and expand the Bush oil empire, no matter what war crimes is committed.

Don’t be fooled into the media campaign and sophisticated disinformation campaign working for the Network of the Judeo-Christo Brotherhood of Zionists. This is not about Syria giving Lebanon a lesson or trying to bargain with Israel for the Golan. Nor it is about an Iranian ploy to buy time to develop Nukes. This line of propaganda and action, like the one we seen today in Beirut, demonstration against Syria and it’s Foreign Minister, promoted by the Bush and neocons companies for the domestic consumption and for illiterate Druze peasants Jumblat and Saudi educated mafia boss. This is about someone in AIPAC, the Pentagon and the White House having a flawed pattern of thinking and doing it in the most flawed of way to get to Iran’s oil. Noting more, nothing less.

You see, with the growing need for oil in China and India economies contributed combined some 44% to world economy growth in 2004, and 58% in 2005. They will be competing for oil with Europe, Japan USA and the rest of the world. The Persian Gulf is were more than 70% of oil and gas reseves is and large part of it is in Iran.

Iran is the most valuable real estate on the planet. They have one of the biggest holdings of gas and oil reserves in the world. second in gas, second in oil. On top of that they have direct access to the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and the Caspian Sea which makes them an awsome distribution center for oil and gas to South Asia, Europe and East Asia.

Hizbullah, the Petro-Zionist thought is an arm of Iran and taking it out was step one to reach Iran’s oil reseves. Step Two is setting up of a giant central hub for protecting the colonial project of XOM in strategic location such as North Lebanon ( I wish I did not sell my Al Arida track of land, but most likely they are not going to pay for it, just take it at gun point, like Iraq and rape anyone that oraise a voice), ofcourse, the cost of this air base will not be paid for by the Trillions in XOM profits but by the incredibally stupid American Taxpayers ( awaiting the return of Jesus soon), cash takin out the shools, the poor and others that will end up being laudered by the Hariri for the plotters in Audi banks and using the Iraq method of inflatting the building cost Ten fold through the non bid awarded contracts.

The Third step is one befor ethe final one. Assad, the deal is simple, you are either on our side or Iran side. Simple dealing, they are cunting on compliance by President Assad in exchange for “Economic” investemnt and Political and regime security. President Assad will be fool to believe a word of this promise. I know the details of what will unfold next in Syria, but will not share it with you.

Finally the ideots think, by next year, Iran wil be ready for the shock and awe campaign.
First, they will repeat what they done in Iraq, try to starve Iranians and weakens them.
Then they move and complete the project.

Who ever came with this master plan, must have been working as a script writer for Universal Studio. It is unreal and far fetched from the reality. Unlike, the well scriptted, happy ending found in a Hollywood movie, Real war can not be scriptted by an author. You cannot pre-cast the actors and hand them the script sheet. Unkown actors, show up on the stage set with own scripts and senarios changes and the set crashes.

This is what is going to happen to this latest pre-scripted genocide movie being filmed in Lebanon now. And the only stage that will crash, will be Israel, and the only actors that will go down are the one contracted by GWB Genocide Production Studios, the Israeli actors.

Jews have simply blown their last chance to make it in the league of nations. Few outcast gypsies they were, few outcast gypsies they will end up.

Where do you expect an impoverished people, poor peasants to go when they are struggling to keep milk and bread on the table. You do not think about that. You just sit in your comfy Washington Office making plans to bring Democracy and Freedom to the world and deliver it using illegal, internationally outlawed 2 tons phosphorus bomb laden with shrapnel.

"Forget about Lebanon. Just look at Iraq."

I did, found out that the Pentagon was funding and arming Militias on all sides and Mossad covers in various ministries training them to kill the other one.

This way, they will eliminate the Iraqi population and never have to get tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity by some tribunal.

No, there is no Islamo-Fascists, Fascism is honorable. Judaism is not.
